Why a spike beats laying the rod down
Shimano's beach reel and rod maintenance article opens its tips with this one: "Always carry with you a beach rod holder to place your rod in." It describes the usual mistake, laying rods on the sand where you plan to fish, as the moment sand gets into the reel before you have cast. If you forget the holder, it suggests leaning the rod on a bucket over a towel.
The same article's second tip is about the tide. Before you set gear down, look at how big the tide is and how far it is from the change, and put your spikes far enough up the beach that a surge does not reach the reels. A spike set at the low-tide line may be standing in the wash an hour later.
PVC or aluminum
PVC is what most bait spikes are made of. Dr.Fish's listing says its PVC tube is "unaffected by saltwater or freshwater," and there are no joints or clamps to corrode. A 27 in PVC tube is simple and light enough to carry several.
Aluminum spikes are thinner, take a sharper point and can telescope. Dr.Fish says the sharp tip of its PVC-and-aluminum spike "easily penetrates even hard-packed sand," and Casvexo's telescopic spikes collapse into a bag. The trade-off is metal parts: give them a freshwater rinse and let the joints dry, as you would a reel.
Length and setting depth
Length decides how high the reel sits. A 42 in spike holds the reel and the rod tip higher above the sand and the breakers than a 27 in tube, which matters when the wash runs up close. Dr.Fish sells the same spike in 28 and 42 in, so you can pick by beach.
None of these makers gives a depth to set the spike. Their instructions come down to pushing the pointed end in. So set it until it stands firm with the rod in it and the tip loaded, and check it again as the tide rises and the sand softens around it.
Open-face spikes
An open-face spike lets the rod lift straight out instead of sliding up a closed tube. Hatteras Jack's Deerfield Open Face Sand Spike page describes one: 6061 aluminum angle, a 3.5 in bottom cup set 16 in from the top, and 47.5 or 59.5 in overall, and says the design lets you "get the rod out much quicker." It is sold by the tackle shop, not on Amazon.

Spikes we left out
Sea Striker's 27 in PVC spike was listed by Fishermen's Source, not Sea Striker, so it did not meet our seller rule. DoubleFill's PVC and aluminum spikes, BLUEWING's adjustable aluminum spike, HappyAlley's two-stage spike and the Chiliqi and Rolitwils spikes were each sold by a store with a different name from the brand.

How far from the water should I set a sand spike?
Far enough that the next surge will not reach the reel, which depends on the tide. Shimano's beach advice is to check how big the tide is and how far it is from the change before you set gear down, and to move up the beach as the water rises.
What if my rods have different butt lengths?

Do I need to rinse a PVC spike?
