Saltwater Fillet Knives (2026)

Saltwater is hard on a fillet knife in two ways: salt spots the blade, and slime makes the handle slippery. The choices come down to length and flex for the fish you keep, the steel the maker names, a sheath that drains, and, if you clean a lot of fish, whether an electric knife is worth it.

How we chose: we did not test these knives; blade steel, lengths and care come from the Amazon listings and the makers' pages, and each knife was sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock on September 29, 2026.

Blade length and flex

No standard says which length suits which fish, so we use the makers' own advice. Kershaw pitches its 7.5 in narrow fillet at "smaller fresh and saltwater fish" and says the 9 in curved suits "most large fish and game." KastKing sells 6, 7 and 9 in fillet knives and a stiffer 9 in steaking knife "for the biggest game fish."

Flex is for following the backbone and ribs. BUBBA says its tapered blade adds flexibility "for maneuvering around bone," and Dexter says the SOFGRIP has "just the right amount of flex to glide smoothly over bones." A stiffer blade, like KastKing's steaking knife or its 5 in bait knife, is for cutting through, not around.

What the stainless grades mean here

Each maker names a different steel, and none publishes a salt-spray test for its fillet knives.

• 420J2 (Kershaw) is described by Kershaw as offering "excellent corrosion resistance, toughness and resharpens easily."
• G4116 German stainless (KastKing) comes with KastKing's claim that the blades "maintain their edge longer in both fresh and saltwater."
• DEXSTEEL (Dexter) is Dexter's own high-carbon, high-alloy stainless that it says "resists corrosion and maintains sharpness."
• Titanium-nitride and titanium coatings (BUBBA and the KastKing electric) are sold as corrosion and edge protection on a stainless blade.

Read "corrosion resistant" as the maker's word. Stainless resists rust; it does not rule it out, which is why every care routine below ends with drying the blade.

Rinse-after care, by maker

Dexter's listings spell care out most clearly: "Hand wash in mild/medium-strength detergent and towel-dry immediately. Not suitable for use in automatic dishwashers. Do not soak or submerge in water for long periods."

Kershaw's product care page says to keep a knife clean, "wash with a mild detergent and dry thoroughly," and to wipe "a light coating of oil on the blade" before storage. For light rust spots it suggests a gentle abrasive such as metal polish. The page is written for pocketknives, but the steel advice applies to any Kershaw blade.

The sheath matters too. A wet knife put away in a closed sheath sits in salt water. Dexter's Dextreme sheath has "vents for airflow and drainage," and KastKing says its sheath's open slots let "water to drain easily so that your knives stay dry and sharp." Rinse the sheath along with the knife.

When an electric fillet knife makes sense

An electric knife drives two serrated blades back and forth, so the blade does the sawing. It suits a cooler-full of fish of similar size; for one or two fish, the charging and cleaning are more work than a manual knife.

The two here are cordless. Rapala's R12 lists "80 Minute Run Time" and ships with 6 and 7.5 in blades. KastKing lists "up to 1 hour and 40 minutes of continuous runtime" from a 12.6 V battery, and 7 and 9 in blades. Neither listing gives care instructions, so follow the manual for the battery and the blades.

We left out BUBBA's Pro Series and 110 V electric knives: on Amazon they were sold only by third-party resellers, not Amazon.com or a BUBBA store.

Knives we left out

Dexter-Russell's white-handled Sani-Safe fillet knives were on Amazon only from resellers (Endlessmart, HnB Market). BUBBA's 7 and 9 in fixed-blade fillet knives were also sold only by resellers; the 8 in above was sold by Amazon.com.

We found no CPSC recall of fillet knives in our recall tracker; the one hand-tool recall it lists since 2023 is Leatherman's July 2025 multi-tool recall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a fillet knife go in the dishwasher?

Not the Dexters: both listings say they are "not suitable for use in automatic dishwashers." Rapala does call the blades of its corded Heavy Duty electric knife "dishwasher safe," so check the listing for the exact knife.

Does Kershaw sharpen its knives?

Kershaw's product care page says it offers free lifetime sharpening and repair at its Tualatin, Oregon facility. Check the page for how to send a knife in.

How long a blade do I need for a 30 in fish?

The makers do not tie blade length to fish length. Kershaw points its 9 in curved blade at most large fish and sells a 12 in curved knife as well; KastKing's longest is a 9 in steaking knife.
