Fishing Rain Bibs and Jackets (2026)

Rain gear for fishing has to handle rain, spray over the bow, and a deck wet with fish and bait, often while you kneel or lean on a gunwale. Two families do the job: coated fabrics (PVC or polyurethane) that are simply waterproof, and breathable shells built around a membrane. What the makers publish about each differs, and a few numbers are not comparable across brands.

How we chose: we did not test this gear; the picks come from Frogg Toggs', Grundéns' and Columbia's product pages and Amazon listings, and all six were sold by Amazon.com and in stock on September 29, 2026.

Reading waterproof and breathability ratings

Frogg Toggs gives its FTX Armor gear two figures: "15,000 water holdout / 10,000 MVTR breathability," per its FTX Armor jacket page. The first is how much water pressure the fabric holds back; MVTR is moisture vapor transmission rate, how much sweat vapor it lets out. Frogg Toggs does not print the units.

Grundéns writes the same idea as "10K/5K Waterproof/Breathable" for its Weather Watch jacket. Neither form is a standard label, and makers can test differently, so treat a bigger number as better only within one brand's line.

Most pieces here carry no figure at all. Frogg Toggs lists none for its Pilot II Guide jacket and bib, and Columbia's listing for the Force XII OdX describes OutDry Extreme as "for prolonged exposure to heavy rain or snow" without a number. We report that as the maker's description, not a rating.

PVC and PU coatings vs breathable membranes

Grundéns builds its heavy bibs from coated fabric. Its Herkules 16 Bib is a double-sided PVC-coated poly/cotton shell, and its Neptune Bib is PU-coated polyester. Grundéns lists both under "Waterproof Specs" and the maker calls each 100% waterproof; it makes no breathability claim for either.

Breathable gear puts a membrane or laminate behind a water-repellent face. Frogg Toggs' DriPore Gen2 is the middle layer of the FTX Armor, and Grundéns' Weather Watch uses a waterproof breathable polyurethane laminate under DWR-treated nylon, per the maker pages above.

Columbia's OutDry Extreme turns that around. The maker's listing calls it a first-of-its-kind external waterproof technology, with the breathable membrane on the outside and soft, dry fabric on the inside.

Grundéns itself frames the choice. It calls the breathable Weather Watch "the perfect utility piece when you don't need your heavy-duty foul weather gear," which leaves the coated Neptune and Herkules for the heaviest, wettest deck work.

Seams and closures

A waterproof fabric still leaks where needles have punched it. Every piece in the table has sealed seams by its maker's description: "fully taped and sealed" for the Frogg Toggs FTX Armor and Pilot II, "fully taped" for the StormWatch, "externally seam-sealed" for the Columbia.

Closures are where the listings differ. The Pilot II jacket uses splash-resistant zippers behind an internal storm flap and adds internal wrist gaskets, per Frogg Toggs. The FTX Armor and Columbia use neoprene cuffs, and the Columbia's front zipper is PU-coated.

Which set for which angler

Fishing in rain for hours from an open boat, the FTX Armor jacket and bib are the only set here with stated figures and reinforced knees and seat. The Pilot II Guide pair suits cold mornings: Frogg Toggs builds zips into the jacket for its Co-Pilot liner.

The StormWatch bib is a taped 420D nylon bib for the odd wet day. The Columbia Force XII OdX is a jacket only, for heavy rain and spray.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bib or pants for boat fishing?

Bibs, for most anglers. A bib covers the chest and back, where spray and rain run down under a jacket hem, and the ones here add suspenders and chest pockets. Frogg Toggs sells the Pilot II Guide both ways.

How do I wash coated fishing bibs?

Follow the care label. Grundéns' Neptune Bib page says to machine wash at 40°C with mild detergent and tumble dry low, and not to use powder detergent, fabric softener or bleach.

Does the StormWatch jacket have a rating even though the bib doesn't?

Its Amazon listing says it "provides 8,000mm waterproof breathable protection," and calls it suitable for a full day in the rain. Frogg Toggs' own StormWatch jacket page lists 420-denier nylon and taped seams but repeats no figure.
