Boat Shoes and Water Shoes for Fishing (2026)

Fishing footwear for warm days splits in two. Deck shoes and boat shoes are made to grip a wet fiberglass deck without marking it. Water shoes and water sandals are made to get wet, drain and dry, and some protect your toes on rock and shell. A few try to do both. The claims to check are the non-marking sole, the drainage and the toe.

How we chose: we did not test these shoes. Every claim comes from the Amazon listing or the maker's description, and we link a shoe only when Amazon.com or the brand's own store sells it and it was in stock when we checked on September 29, 2026.

What "non-marking" does and doesn't promise

A non-marking outsole is supposed to leave no black scuffs on a white gelcoat deck. KEEN puts it plainly for the Newport H2: "non marking rubber outsoles leave no imprint when walking indoors or on boats." Huk, Columbia and Sperry make the same claim for the Brewster, the Bahama Vent and the Authentic Original.

None of these makers names a test for it, and none names a slip-resistance standard such as ASTM F2913 on the listings we read. Both claims are the maker's word. If you fish someone else's boat, ask the owner what they allow on deck.

Drain it or seal it

Water that gets into a shoe has to leave somewhere. Huk builds the Brewster for "360 degree drainage," saying it is "engineered to allow water to escape from any angle," with drainage ports and an EVA midsole. Columbia says the Drainmaker XTR's mesh and webbing make it "drain-able for all your water activities" and that the shoe is "built to drain and dry fast."

The Huk Rogue Wave Shoe goes the other way. Its neoprene and rubber upper is there to keep your feet dry "no matter how nasty the weather gets," per the listing. That works for spray on deck. Step into knee-deep water and it fills like a boot and stays full.

Traditional boat shoes sit in between. The Bahama Vent is vented for breathability, and the Sperry is handsewn leather; neither is a drainage shoe.

Toe protection on rock, shell and deck hardware

Only one shoe here states toe protection. KEEN says the Newport H2's "iconic toe bumper offers additional safety to help prevent injury." On a jetty or an oyster bar, or against a deck cleat, that rubber cap is the difference between a sandal and a shoe.

Open-toe sandals leave toes to rocks and dropped hooks. The Drainmaker and the Brewster have closed toes, but neither listing describes a reinforced toe cap.

Which one for how you fish

If you fish from a center console or bay boat, start with the Huk Brewster. It states all three things a deck shoe needs: a non-marking sole, water channels in the tread and drainage in the shoe. It slips on, which helps when you're in and out of the cabin.

If you wade the flats, surf-fish in summer or climb jetties, the KEEN Newport H2 is the only shoe here with a stated toe bumper. KEEN also says it is machine washable, which helps after sand and mud.

For dock-to-deck wear, the Bahama Vent and the Sperry Authentic Original are boat shoes with stated non-marking siped soles. Rinse leather in fresh water after salt spray.

Shoes we left out

Merrell water shoes were on Amazon only from third-party sellers or not yet available when we checked. The Columbia PFG Boatside is sold by Amazon.com, but its listing makes no non-marking or drainage claim, so it had nothing for us to report. Several KEEN Newport H2 colors are also offered by resellers; the two we link are sold by Amazon.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put KEEN Newport H2 sandals in the washing machine?

Yes, per KEEN's care note on the listing: use a small amount of detergent on a gentle cycle, then air dry away from heat.

Is the Huk Rogue Wave Shoe the same as the Rogue Wave deck boot?

Do water shoes work inside waders?
