Before the accessories: the life jacket
The Coast Guard's 2024 recreational boating statistics count paddlecraft as 26% of boating deaths where the vessel type was known, with kayaks alone at 16%.
The Coast Guard's federal requirements guide says every recreational vessel must carry a wearable life jacket for each person aboard; canoes and kayaks are exempt only from the extra throwable. In its section for anglers and paddlers, it warns that kayaks "tend to be less stable and can easily capsize," and asks whether you can climb back in "with all your gear on."

Rod holders: track or bolt-on
Most fishing kayaks now come with gear tracks. On those, the Scotty 0282-BK is the simpler choice: its Gear-Head adapter slides into a track and locks with a twist, per the listing, so the holder moves wherever you want it. It comes with a length of track too.
On a kayak without tracks, the Scotty 0280-BK uses the same cradle on Scotty's 0241 side or deck mount, which bolts on. Both cradles take a baitcaster or a spinning reel, clear trigger grips, and latch the rod with a soft strap, per the listings.
Paddle leash
A paddle that floats away leaves you hand-paddling back. The Pelican leash clips to the kayak with a carabiner and loops around the paddle shaft; it stretches from 30 to 65 inches and is rated to 20 pounds, per the listing. The same leash works on a rod you set down to land a fish.
Anchoring: trolley, anchor and lock
An anchor trolley runs a ring along the side of the kayak on a pulley loop, so the anchor line can be moved without leaving the seat. Perception's listing says its kit lets you anchor from the bow, stern or mid-ship and deploy the anchor from the cockpit.
That choice of end matters. The Coast Guard's guide warns: "Do not anchor from the stern as this could swamp the boat." With a trolley, you can run the ring to the bow end before you drop the anchor.
The same guide gives the rule of thumb for line: five to seven times the water depth, plus the distance from the surface to where the line ties off. In 8 feet of water with the tie-off 2 feet up, that's 50 to 70 feet of line.
The Seachoice grapnel folds flat for storage and locks open or closed; it is 3.5 pounds of galvanized malleable iron, and Seachoice lists it for small watercraft and dinghies. The Scotty #276 Anchor Lock holds the line with a lock-and-release action, per the listing, which Scotty describes for small boats in still water.
Key point: keep a way to let go fast. The Coast Guard's guide warns that kayaks capsize easily, and a lock-and-release like the Scotty's frees the line with one motion.
Crate for tackle
The Wilderness Systems Kayak Crate sits in the tankwell behind the seat. Its listing gives a 29-liter main compartment, a lid that adds storage, four rod holders with brackets to raise them in narrow tankwells, lash-down points, and says it is water resistant when latched closed.
YakAttack's BlackPak Pro crates and anchor trolley and Railblaza's mounts are listed on Amazon too, but offered only through third-party sellers when we checked, so they are not linked. Seattle Sports' leash and anchor kit were left out because the seller's name did not match the brand's own store.

Does a kayak with a trolling motor follow different rules?
Yes, for navigation. The Coast Guard's federal requirements guide says a canoe, kayak or SUP under mechanical propulsion is considered a power-driven vessel. It also says vessels with propulsion machinery must be registered in their state of principal use, and some states require all vessels, paddled ones included, to be registered.
Does the Coast Guard regulate kayak anchors or paddles?
No. The same guide says the Coast Guard "does not regulate anchors, paddles, rearview mirrors, or diver/ski flags," so no Coast Guard approval applies to the anchor, trolley or leash here.
What if I fall out with waders on?
Stay calm and keep the life jacket on. The Coast Guard's guide says air trapped in clothing provides buoyancy, and bending your knees traps air in waders; thrashing tires you and lets that air escape.
