Saltwater Fishing Line: Braid, Mono, Fluoro (2026)

Saltwater line comes in three materials, and they often go on the same reel: braid as the main line, with a fluorocarbon or heavy mono leader tied to the end, which Berkley suggests to hide braid from the fish. Plain monofilament still has a place where stretch helps. The makers' own specs and care notes follow, including what they say about sun, salt and replacing line.

Braid, mono and fluorocarbon: what each maker says

Berkley's braid guide, written for freshwater but about the material, says braid "often lasts longer on your reel due to its durability and its high resistance to UV damage with very little water absorption." It is also "typically the most visible underwater," and Berkley suggests pairing it with a fluorocarbon or mono leader.

Monofilament is the opposite. Berkley's monofilament guide says the nylon "can create weaknesses over time that could result in fraying and breakage, especially with additional exposure to UV rays," and that mono absorbs water, which "will also weaken it and reduce its flexibility over time."

Fluorocarbon holds up to sun. Seaguar's fluorocarbon FAQ says it "is not affected by fluorescent lighting or other forms of UV rays," absorbs very little water, sinks faster than mono or braid and is "extremely abrasion resistant." Seaguar adds that salt or brackish water has no effect on its line, but "you should always rinse off your gear."

Diameter: why braid fits more line on a reel

Sufix publishes a full chart on its 832 Advanced Superline page. A few rows:

Berkley's listing puts 30 lb Big Game mono at 0.022 in, about twice the Sufix 30 lb figure. That is why a reel holds far more braid than mono at the same test.

Sufix builds 832 from "8 fibers (7 HMPE fibers plus 1 GORE Performance Fiber) and 32 weaves (pics) per inch," per the same page, and says the GORE fiber improves abrasion resistance and casting. It sells 832 in Low-Vis Green, Hi-Vis Yellow, Coastal Camo, Ghost and Neon Lime.

Leaders

The leader is the short piece between the braid and the hook, and it takes the wear. Seaguar's listing calls Blue Label "a top choice for braid to leader connections because it cinches easily for fail-safe knots," and pitches it for trolling, casting plugs and deep jigging.

Heavy mono is the other choice. Berkley's Big Game leader runs from 30 to 400 lb; at 80 lb it is 0.035 in across, per its listing, and Berkley sells it on "shock strength and abrasion resistance."

Seaguar's FAQ gives the case for fluorocarbon: it is "virtually invisible," sinks faster and has less stretch than mono. Berkley's line primer puts the trade the other way: with fluorocarbon's near invisibility "you can't have the floating quality of braid or monofilament."

When to replace line

None of the three makers we read gives a fixed schedule. Their material notes point one way, though: mono is the line Berkley says sun and water weaken, braid the one it says lasts longer, and fluorocarbon the one Seaguar says UV doesn't touch.

What we would do with that: respool mono more often than braid, and cut back a frayed or nicked leader as soon as you see it. Berkley names fraying and breakage as how mono fails. Braid on the reel can stay until it frays.

Old line shouldn't go in the trash can at the ramp. Florida's Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program, run with the state's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, says there are over 1,600 fishing line recycling bins around the state at boat ramps, piers, marinas and tackle shops.

What we left out

PowerPro, one of the best-known braids, had no listing sold by Amazon.com or a PowerPro or Shimano store on September 29, 2026; every one we found came from resellers. Seaguar's Inshore fluorocarbon listing mixes in copy for Seaguar's ice line, so we used Blue Label instead. We found no recalls for these brands in our recall list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I store fluorocarbon in the sun?

Seaguar says yes: fluorocarbon "is not affected by fluorescent lighting or other forms of UV rays," so it doesn't need to be kept in the dark.

Does sunscreen damage fishing line?

Not fluorocarbon, per Seaguar: bug sprays and sun blocks "will have no effect on fluorocarbon," though it still suggests washing your hands after handling anything that might affect your fishing.

Does Sufix 832 fade?

Sufix says its TGP technology "enhances color retention." It doesn't claim the color is permanent, and the Hi-Vis Yellow and Neon Lime versions are made to be seen.
