Submersible Hip and Sling Packs for Fishing (2026)

A pack at the waist or across the back keeps a phone, keys and a box of jigs with you when you wade a beach, a flat or a rock ledge, or launch a kayak through the shorebreak. The decision is how wet it will get: a submersible pack with an airtight zipper, or a water-resistant one that handles spray and rain but not the swell that reaches your belt.

Submersible, IPX8 or water resistant

The only IP code here that comes with a fixed depth is BOTE's. Under IEC 60529, IP67 means dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion to 1 meter for 30 minutes. IPX8 means continuous immersion beyond that, on terms the maker sets, and neither Goture nor Dovesun states a depth or time on its listing.

BOTE's Highwater Belt Pack page calls the pack "100% waterproof, fully submersible" and says its patented TRU Zip zipper is "waterproof, dustproof, airtight, and submersible (IP67)." Both compartments use it, which matters: on the Goture, the Dovesun and the MAXITHAN, only the main pocket has the airtight zipper.

Simms is plain about the Tributary. Its product page calls it a "durable, water-resistant hip pack" in 630D nylon with a TPU-coated face, 5 liters, with YKK zippers. That keeps out rain and spray on a flat. It is not built to sit under a wave.

Airtight zippers need care

A submersible zipper only seals when it is fully closed. MAXITHAN's listing tells you to "press down on the bag to check for air leakage before wading," to use the thumb supports when closing it, and to apply zipper grease. Dovesun's instructions are the same, and both warn that the zipper is stiff at first and loosens with use.

Fishpond, which uses the same TRU Zip on its Thunderhead line, sells a TruZip lubricant bottle alongside the Thunderhead Submersible Lumbar. Salt crystals dry in the teeth of any zipper, so rinse the pack in fresh water after a salt day and let it dry open. Our tackle rust guide covers what the metal inside needs.

Waist pack or sling

A waist pack rides at the hip, which is where the water gets to first when you wade. That is why the belt packs here lean on sealed zippers. The MAXITHAN is the roomier one at 4.5 liters, with a belt from 32 to 64 in that the listing says fits over waders; see our surf fishing waders guide for why the wading belt still goes on underneath.

A sling rides higher and carries more. The Goture takes 3600-size trays, has a purge valve to squeeze out air so it sits flat, and unclips at the waist to swing round to the front. On a kayak, that means you can open it without taking it off.

The KastKing BlowBak is a sling for walking to a pier or a jetty. It has a neoprene pocket that carries a rod or combo and room for two 3600 trays, but KastKing describes only a water-repellent coating inside. If you fish from a kayak

A sealed pack still belongs clipped to the boat, not loose on the deck. The BOTE's D-rings and the Goture's and Dovesun's D-rings all take a carabiner, per their listings, so the pack can be tethered to a pad eye when it is off your waist.

Packs we left out

Fishpond's Thunderhead lumbar and sling packs were listed by a store called The Kingfisher, not by Fishpond, so they did not meet our seller rule. Seipel Marine's Seeker Hip Pack was sold by Hyperlite Store, Xelfly's by Jellyfish Brands and Piscifun's by WILDPULSE. Simms' Dry Creek Z packs were listed by Amazon.com only with a lead time on October 1, 2026.

We found no recalls for BOTE, MAXITHAN, Goture, Dovesun, Simms or KastKing in our recall list, which covers CPSC notices since 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does IPX8 mean I can swim with the pack?

Only to the depth and time the maker names, and neither IPX8 listing here names one. IEC 60529 leaves IPX8 conditions to the manufacturer, so the only fixed figure among these packs is BOTE's IP67: 1 meter for 30 minutes.

Will a submersible pack float?

The makers here do not say. Goture's purge valve is there to push air out so the pack sits flat, which also means less trapped air to float it. Clip any pack to yourself or the kayak rather than counting on it to bob.

How do I keep an airtight zipper working?

Close it fully, rinse the salt off after each trip and lubricate it. MAXITHAN's listing recommends zipper grease, and Fishpond sells a dedicated TruZip lubricant for the same kind of zipper.
