Best Kayak Carts for Beach Launches (2026)

The walk from the truck to the water is the hardest part of a beach launch with a rigged fishing kayak. A cart takes the weight, but only if its wheels suit the ground and its frame suits the hull. Two choices matter most: balloon wheels or airless ones, and a bunk cart you strap the kayak to or a scupper cart that plugs into the hull.

How we chose: we did not test these carts; we compared the weight ratings, wheel types and frame designs the makers publish, and kept carts sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock on September 30, 2026.

Balloon wheels or airless for sand

Wide, soft tires spread the load so they ride on top of loose sand. Suspenz says its beach wheels let a cart "float over soft sand," measure 12 to 13 in across when inflated, and support up to 240 lb, 121 lb per wheel. The Wilderness Systems, Bonnlo and VEVOR beach carts all use the same kind of balloon tire.

Airless and flat-free wheels cannot puncture, which is their appeal on a shell-strewn path or a gravel lot. They are narrower, though. Wilderness Systems sells its heavy-duty frame with either wheel set, and the listing says the flat-free wheels raise the rating from 330 to 450 lb; the balloon set is the one it describes for sand.

Balloon tires have their own weak spot. VEVOR's listing warns that its 13 in beach tires are "not suitable for gravel roads" and risk breaking there, so if your launch path crosses gravel, look at a cart that takes both wheel types.

Bunk carts or scupper carts

A bunk cart is a padded cradle on an axle: you set the kayak on the bars and strap it down. It fits almost any hull. The Suspenz Catch-All goes further, with bunker bars that rotate lengthwise or crosswise for tunnel, catamaran and V hulls, per the Suspenz product page.

A scupper cart has two posts that drop through the scupper holes of a sit-on-top. Suspenz says its SOT Airless Cart "doesn't require tie down straps." The catch is fit: the Suspenz cart reaches scuppers up to 26.5 in apart, and Bonnlo's plug-in cart needs holes at least 1 in across. Measure your hull before you order.

Stern carts are a third type, strapped under one end of a touring kayak. Suspenz's EZ-Stow Stern Cart is one, and Suspenz says it is not for sit-on-top kayaks, so it is left out here.

Weight rating: count the whole load

Each rating is the maker's, and it covers the kayak plus everything on it. A pedal-drive fishing kayak with a crate, a battery and rods adds up fast. The Wilderness Systems flat-free cart is rated highest at 450 lb, the VEVOR at 350, the Wilderness Systems beach cart and the Bonnlo balloon cart at 330, the Suspenz Catch-All at 240 and the Suspenz SOT at 150.

Where the cart rides while you fish

A cart has to go somewhere once the kayak is afloat. The Wilderness Systems frame is storable in large hatches with the wheels removed, per its listing. The Suspenz Catch-All breaks down into a bag, the Suspenz SOT folds to 23 x 10 x 3 in, and Bonnlo says its plug-in cart fits a large backpack or the vessel itself.

Salt and the cart

Most of these frames are aluminum: Wilderness Systems calls its frame marine-grade, and Suspenz uses powder-coated or anodized aluminum with stainless hardware. Suspenz's own All-Terrain cart is steel, and its listing warns that it "can rust when used in harsh environments." Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put beach wheels on a cart I already own?

Often, if the axle matches. Suspenz sells its beach wheels in 22 mm and 26 mm hub sizes and says the 26 mm version fits any standard 1 in axle.

Is a stern cart an option for a sit-on-top?

Not the Suspenz one. Suspenz's EZ-Stow Stern Cart listing says it is designed for sea and touring kayaks and "NOT for Sit-On-Top (SOT) kayaks," and that at 4 lb it fits inside a 7 in hatch.

Do I need straps with a scupper cart?

Not with the two here. Suspenz and Bonnlo both sell their scupper carts as strap-free, with posts that hold the kayak through the scupper holes and a kickstand or stopper to steady it while you load.
