All five print the same UPF 50+, so the label alone does not separate them. What does is sleeve length, how the shirt fits, and whether an outside group has looked at the fabric.
What the Skin Cancer Foundation listing adds
The Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation for sun-protective fabric requires a "minimum UPF 50." Its recommended products directory lists Coolibar and Lands' End under clothing, and we found neither O'Neill, UV Skinz nor Speedo there when we checked.
O'Neill's Amazon listing calls the Basic Skins a "Skin Cancer Foundation Recommended Product." We could not match that to the directory, so treat it as the listing's claim. None of the five listings names the lab test behind its UPF.
Long or short sleeves
Long sleeves cover the shoulders and forearms, the spots that face the sun while a child digs or leans over a gunwale. The CDC's sun safety page says to "wear long sleeves and long pants or skirts" and that tightly woven fabric protects best.
The Speedo short-sleeve tee is the one exception here. It suits a child who overheats or fights a long sleeve, but the arms then need sunscreen, reapplied after every swim.
Fit, seams and heat
A rash guard that rubs gets taken off, and then it protects nothing. Coolibar and UV Skinz both use flatlock seams, which sit flat against the skin; O'Neill keeps seams to a minimum. The Coolibar also has an elastic loop that ties the shirt to swim shorts, which keeps a lower back covered when a child bends over.
Heat is the trade-off. Coolibar's own listing says its rash guard is "not moisture-wicking and may cause overheating" in active play. On a hot boat ride, shade and water breaks matter as much as the shirt.
Sizing
O'Neill cuts the Basic Skins to be worn skin-tight and says it is not a slim fit. Lands' End calls its sun tee a regular fit and suggests a size up for a roomier feel. Measure your child against each maker's chart; a shirt bought to grow into will ride up and leave skin bare.
The rest of the sun plan
The American Academy of Pediatrics' sun safety advice asks for a hat with an all-around 3-inch brim, sunglasses with at least 99% UV protection, and broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or more, reapplied every 2 hours and after swimming. It also warns that UV "can bounce back from water, sand, snow, and concrete."
For babies, the CDC says sunscreen is not recommended at 6 months or younger. The AAP adds that sunscreen on small areas such as the face is fine when shade and clothing are not available.
Timing helps too. The CDC puts the strongest UV between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. daylight saving time. A shade canopy or umbrella during those hours protects the legs and face a shirt leaves out.

Shirts we left out
Several top-selling kids' rash guards come from third-party sellers rather than Amazon.com or the brand's own store, so we left them out. We also skipped a Hurley shirt with a large printed logo. We found no CPSC or FDA recall for these five brands in our recall records.

Does a wet rash guard still protect?
The labels here do not say. None of the five listings gives a wet UPF or a test method, so reapply sunscreen to any skin the shirt leaves bare after a swim rather than counting on the shirt alone.
What UPF should a kids' swim shirt have?
The Skin Cancer Foundation sets UPF 50 as its minimum for the Seal, and all five shirts here print UPF 50+ on the label.
Can a baby wear a rash guard instead of sunscreen?
