A crimped connection replaces a knot on heavy mono and wire leaders; Booms rates its CP1 for mono from 50 lb up and wire from 100 lb. Two parts do the work. The sleeve holds the line, and the crimper squeezes the sleeve. Pick the sleeve for the line first, then a crimper whose dies fit the sleeve.

Sleeve types and the crimper each needs
Single-barrel sleeves are small tubes numbered by size (#0, #1 and up) and take a crimper with teeth. American Fishing Wire describes its own toothed crimper as "designed to crimp single-barrel sleeves sizes #0 - #6" and recommends it for its Titanium Surfstrand wire, on its tools page. The Booms CP2 is built the same way for the same sizes.
Double-barrel and oval sleeves hold two passes of the line side by side, which is how a loop is formed in mono or cable. These go in a multi-die crimper. AFW's four-die pliers "crimp oval aluminum sleeves and double barrel copper leader sleeves from 0.1mm to 2.2 mm OD," and its heavy-duty swager handles 0.8 to 3.3 mm sleeves.
Matching the sleeve to your line
The sleeve maker's chart decides the size. Every sleeve package gives an inside diameter or a size number, and every serious leader spool gives a line diameter. Put the two side by side before you buy sleeves.
AFW pairs its sleeves with its wire in its own kits. On its rigging supplies page, AFW sells 30 lb Surflon 1x7 stainless leader wire, "0.024 in / 0.61 mm dia," in a kit with #3 sleeves and crimp pliers. That kit is a good model: wire, sleeve and tool from one maker's chart.
For mono, the line maker's spec sheet gives the number to take to the sleeve chart. Our saltwater fishing line guide lists Berkley's 80 lb Big Game mono leader at 0.035 in. Booms' CP1 kit covers that range with 0.8, 1.2, 1.6 and 2.0 mm sleeves, but check each sleeve's rated line against your leader's diameter.
Which crimper for which leader
- Heavy mono and cable for trolling: the Booms CP1. Its line range is the widest here for mono, and the kit includes four sleeve sizes.
- Light single-strand wire: the Booms CP2 and single-barrel sleeves, for toothy fish on light tackle.
- A mixed rigging box: the iCrimp. Its four dies cover 0.1 to 2.2 mm, and IWISS rates it for 50 to 450 lb test.
- Many rigs in one session: the Booms XW42, whose compound joint Booms says reduces the effort per crimp.
- Tools that live on the boat: the CUDA, the one crimper here with a stainless body.
When 2.2 mm isn't enough
Every hand crimper here tops out around 2.2 mm: the XW42, the iCrimp and the CUDA say so, and the CP1 kit's largest sleeve is 2.0 mm. That covers most inshore and nearshore leaders. Leaders for the biggest fish use bigger sleeves, and AFW moves to a different class of tool for them.
AFW says of its own four-die pliers that "for heavier duty crimping, we recommend" its heavy-duty swagers and a six-hole bench crimper, on the same tools page. Its heavy-duty hand swager takes sleeves from 0.8 to 3.3 mm. If your sleeve chart calls for more than 2.2 mm, none of the five crimpers above is the right tool.
AFW also sells crimp protectors: "luminous 50 mm vinyl sleeves" that it says "keep crimps from snagging and tangling," listed on its rigging supplies page.
Salt and the tools themselves
A crimper's jaws are steel, and the finishes differ. Booms plates the CP2 with PTFE and calls it rust resistant. IWISS black-oxides the iCrimp's jaws. Crimpers and sleeves we left out
Hi-Seas and AFW sleeves on Amazon were sold by a storefront called "WCS Brands," not a store in either brand's name, so they didn't meet our seller rule. Jinkai mono sleeves were sold by J&B Tackle Co., and Sea Striker sleeves by Big Dog Tackle. Several sleeve assortments (OROOTL, SILANON, VATEICO) came from third-party storefronts not in the brand's name.

Do I need a crimper for fluorocarbon leaders?
For heavy leader, yes. Booms rates the CP1 for mono and fluorocarbon from 50 to 400 lb, and IWISS rates the iCrimp from 50 lb; neither is rated below that.
What does the number on a single-barrel sleeve mean?
It is the maker's size, not a diameter. AFW sells a light-duty crimper for "sleeves up to size #4" and a micro crimper for "#0 and #1 sleeves," so the number tells you which tool fits.
Can I crimp with a pair of pliers?
Not for oval or double-barrel sleeves: AFW and the makers here sell multi-die tools sized to the sleeve's outside diameter. Some fishing pliers carry a single-barrel crimp position, per their makers.
