Kayak Fishing Paddles (2026)

A fishing kayak is wide, heavy with gear, and often has a seat that raises you well above the water. All three push you toward a longer paddle than the one you learned on, and the fishing extras (a notch to pull a snagged lure, a tape on the shaft) decide the rest.

How we chose: we did not test these paddles; lengths and materials come from the makers' listings and Bending Branches' sizing guide, and each was sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock on September 30, 2026.

Sizing: height, kayak width and seat height

Bending Branches, which makes only paddles, publishes the clearest kayak fishing paddle sizing guide. It says to look at "three variables: your height, your kayak's width and your seat height," and that fishing kayaks need "a longer paddle (typically 240-260cm)."

Its worked example: at 5 ft 8 in in a 32 in wide kayak, "you'll want a paddle that's 250 cm long." And if you fish mostly from a high seat, "you'll need to size your paddle up 10 cm."

The Pelican listings size the same way. Pelican puts its 240 cm Poseidon Angler with paddlers over 5 ft 5 in in kayaks over 34 in wide, the 250 cm with "wider fishing kayaks," and The Catch at 102.4 in with anglers over 6 ft in kayaks over 34 in wide.

Adjustable or fixed length

A seat that moves is the reason to buy an adjustable paddle. Bending Branches says a fixed-seat kayak is fine with a fixed-length paddle, but with an adjustable seat, "seriously consider buying a paddle that has an adjustable-length ferrule," so one paddle works "whether the seat is set low or high."

The Oceanbroad adjusts from 240 to 260 cm "in 5cm increments," which covers Bending Branches' whole fishing range. The Wonitago runs 230 to 250 cm. The Catch is sold as adjustable, but its listing does not give the range.

The Poseidon Angler and the Carlisle are fixed length: their push-button ferrule joins two pieces and sets the feathering angle, not the length.

Shaft and blade materials

All five use plastic blades reinforced with glass fiber or described simply as plastic: fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene on the Poseidon and Oceanbroad, fiberglass-reinforced nylon on The Catch, glass-filled polypropylene on the Carlisle.

Shafts split into aluminum and fiberglass. Pelican's aluminum Poseidon has an anti-slip grip coating and an oval section on the right side of the shaft, called indexing, that "tells you where to place your hand." Carlisle's fiberglass shaft is indexed and wrapped for grip "even in hot or cold temperatures." Lighter carbon shafts exist from Bending Branches and Aqua Bound, but not from a trusted seller on Amazon (see below).

Fishing features: hook notches, tapes and flotation

Hook retrieval. Four paddles build a notch or hook into one blade, and Carlisle calls its version "a J-notch for freeing snagged lines." Bending Branches says the notch helps you "safely retrieve snagged lures." It saves leaning out over the side of a loaded kayak for a lure caught in a mangrove.

Tape measure. The Pelicans have a tape along the shaft; the Wonitago has a 40 in scale engraved on it.

Flotation. Pelican says the 250 cm Poseidon has "2 additional flotation blocks allowing the paddle to float." Wonitago says its blades float. A paddle leash is the backup either way; the Oceanbroad ships with one, and our kayak fishing accessories guide covers Pelican's.

Paddles we left out

Most well-known paddle makers sell on Amazon through resellers. Bending Branches and Aqua Bound paddles were sold by ENB Ventures, not a store in either brand's name. Werner paddles were sold by River Sports Outfitters and Backcountry. Carlisle's Magic Mystic and Day Tripper were sold by 4Wheel Online and other resellers; only the Magic Angler came from Amazon.com. All are established brands; we could not confirm who was shipping them.

What is feathering, and do I need it?

Feathering sets the two blades at an angle to each other. Pelican says offset blades "reduce the wind resistance on the top blade" as it moves through the air, and its push button sets 0 or 65 degrees. Paddle with blades in line if the offset feels awkward.

Does the Poseidon Angler come in other lengths?

Yes. Amazon.com sells it in 240 cm (94.5 in) and 250 cm (98.5 in). Pelican says both suit paddlers over 5 ft 5 in; the 250 cm is the one it matches to wider fishing kayaks.
