How to Keep Saltwater Tackle From Rusting (2026)

Salt water leaves a film on every hook, split ring and lure through-wire, and a closed box keeps it damp. Stopping it takes three habits: rinse and dry, store closed with an inhibitor or a desiccant, and replace what has already rusted.

Dry comes first

No inhibitor fixes wet tackle. Flambeau's Zerust FAQ says that when wet parts go into a Zerust product "a certain amount of corrosion can be anticipated," and that the amount depends on how wet the part is and on the pH and contamination of the water.

So the routine after a saltwater trip is to rinse lures and terminal tackle in fresh water, shake them off and let them hang until they are dry before they go back in a closed box. How a vapor corrosion inhibitor works

A vapor corrosion inhibitor (VCI) gives off a vapor that settles on bare metal as a very thin protective layer. Flambeau's FAQ says that layer stays only while the container stays closed, "less than one air exchange per day" ideally, and that once a part leaves the box the layer "dissipates from metal surfaces (typically within about an hour)."

That has a practical consequence on the water. Tackle is protected in storage, not while it rides in an open tray on the deck. A lure that spends the day in a rod holder or a bucket gets no benefit until it is dry and back in the box.

Flambeau builds Zerust into its Tuff Tainer dividers and says those carry enough VCI for the box they come in. For "larger enclosed spaces," the same FAQ recommends Zerust plaques or capsules, "which contain a higher VCI concentration." A soft tackle bag full of utility boxes is the case for the plaque.

Plano's Rustrictor is also a VCI

Plano does not explain Rustrictor on its tackle boxes, but its Rustrictor All Weather 2 case page does: a "VCI-infused resin and foam emitter" that Plano says "blocks rust/corrosion 5x longer than competing products (per accelerated lab testing)." Plano names no test standard or duration.

So a Plano Rustrictor box and a Flambeau Zerust box work the same way and ask the same of you: clean, dry tackle and a lid that stays shut.

Desiccants: take the moisture out

Silica gel does a different job. It pulls water vapor out of the air in a sealed box, which matters when you close a lid on a humid dock. Dry & Dry's listing says one 5 g packet covers about 600 cubic inches, and Vbeijll's 20 g packets cover up to 120 cubic inches each.

Both makers say their packets can be reused. Dry & Dry gives an oven at 200 to 250°F for half an hour to two hours, or a microwave on defrost for 7 to 12 minutes. Vbeijll's beads turn from orange to dark green when full, which tells you when a packet needs that treatment.

A desiccant and a VCI can share a box. Flambeau says Zerust keeps working "in the presence of light moisture," and a packet of silica gel keeps the moisture light.

Hook finishes, and when to replace

A hook's finish is its own rust defense. BKK says the Viper-41's Bright Tin coating is there "to resist even harsh saltwater environments." Mustad lists a finish for each model on its circle hook pages, from Black Nickel to Duratin to stainless steel, but does not rate them against each other.

Zerust cannot bring a rusted hook back: the Flambeau FAQ says it "cannot remove corrosion that has already formed." We would replace a treble that shows rust rather than store it in a box of clean ones, and keep spares in a VCI bag so the replacements are ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Zerust keep working after I open the box?

Only while it is closed. Flambeau's Zerust FAQ cites electron spectroscopy tests showing that two to four hours after a steel panel is taken out of a Zerust product, all traces of the protective layer are gone.

Does it matter which way a Zerust plaque faces?

No. Flambeau says almost all Zerust products are active on both sides and that "no attention needs to be paid to a possible effective distance" inside the enclosure.

How should I store Zerust products I have not used yet?

In their original packaging, out of direct sunlight, below 85°F and 50% relative humidity, per Flambeau's FAQ, and put them to use within three years of receipt to get the full protection period.
