Wader and Drysuit Repair: Aquaseal and Patches (2026)

A pinhole in a pair of waders means a wet leg by the end of a surf session; a split gasket seam on a drysuit means cold water where you least want it. Most of these leaks can be fixed at home with urethane adhesive, neoprene cement or a patch. Which one depends on the fabric and how soon you need the gear back.

Before you glue anything: warranty and cleaning

Check the warranty first. Simms' wader care page warns in capitals that "repairing your own waders can impact your warranty," and gives a phone number to call if in doubt. If your waders are new, a factory repair may cost you nothing.

The same page explains why salt gear leaks. Simms says to rinse after saltwater use "as salt can gradually damage the wader seams, fabric, and hardware," and that mildew, not hard use, is the top reason waders come back for repair. Once mildew gets between layers, Simms says, it lifts the seams and causes leaks.

Finding the leak

GEAR AID's wader repair guide starts with the obvious: turn the waders inside out and look over the seams and fabric for gaps. Simms points GORE-TEX wader owners to a video from its repair technician on finding and patching pinholes, on the same care page.

Mark each spot with a pen as you find it. Adhesive goes on a clean, dry surface, so the leak has to be found before the waders are washed and dried for the repair.

Aquaseal FD: the permanent fix for waders

Aquaseal FD is a clear urethane that GEAR AID says bonds to neoprene, nylon, GORE-TEX and vinyl and "cures to a flexible rubber." Its product page gives the steps: clean and dry the area, spread a thin layer slightly beyond the damage, lay the item flat and let it cure for 8 to 12 hours.

For a tear, GEAR AID's wader guide adds detail. Clean with isopropyl alcohol (max 70%), mask off the area with painter's tape, cover the tear with FD by at least 0.5 in, and cure 8 to 12 hours flat. Its tip for a faster, stronger job: a Tenacious Tape patch outside, FD inside, and a second patch over the adhesive.

For a leaking seam, the guide says to apply FD straight onto the seam, 0.25 in onto the fabric each side, and brush it into the stitching and folds. GEAR AID's Aquaseal tips say most repairs reach full strength overnight, 10 to 14 hours, longer for thick ones.

If you need the waders sooner, the same tips page says to mix in Cure Accelerator at 1 part to 3 or 4 parts Aquaseal FD "for a faster cure of two hours or less." Once the tube is open, GEAR AID's wader guide suggests keeping it in the freezer, which it says extends shelf life to up to six months.

Aquaseal UV: a pinhole fix at the truck

Aquaseal UV cures in sunlight. GEAR AID's UV tips say to apply it in full shade, work it into the fabric, overlap the hole by at least 1/4 in, then put the item in the sun, where it cures in about 30 seconds, or 45 for a thick repair, and longer under cloud.

The limits are clear in the same notes. Glass blocks the UV it needs, it cannot bond two fabrics, it is "for pinhole repairs only," and it must never go onto waders while someone is wearing them. GEAR AID recommends FD for permanent repairs.

Aquaseal NEO: neoprene and drysuit seams

Neoprene waders and the neoprene parts of drysuits need a contact cement that stretches. GEAR AID's Aquaseal NEO page gives four steps: clean the tear, coat both edges and wait 5 minutes until tacky, apply a second coat and wait 10 minutes, then press the edges together and hold for 5 to 10 minutes.

For drysuits, GEAR AID's Aquaseal tips list sealing gasket seams among FD's uses, and NEO's listing names drysuit gaskets. A torn latex gasket itself is a replacement job; ask the suit's maker before you glue one.

Foul-weather jackets and bibs

Shell fabrics take tape and a seam sealer rather than a thick urethane. Tenacious Tape bonds to nylon, polyester, vinyl and rubber, per its listing, and GEAR AID says a repair becomes machine washable after 24 hours. Seam Grip WP seals up to 12 ft of seams per 1 oz tube and cures to a flexible rubber seal, per its listing.

Where should waders dry after a salt trip?

In a well-ventilated spot out of direct sun, per Simms' wader care page, which says prolonged UV exposure and daily temperature swings damage the fabric and seams. Turn them inside out once the outside is dry so the lining dries too.

How should I store waders after a repair?

Rolled, not folded, per Simms' wader care page, which says creases become weak points. Simms also says to store bootfoot waders with the boots resting on the ground to take stress off the boot seam.

Does Aquaseal FD work on rubber boots?

Yes. GEAR AID's wader guide lists rubber among the wader materials FD repairs, and the kit on this page is sold as a wader and boot kit.
