What UPF 50 on a sleeve means
The Skin Cancer Foundation says "a UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays and allows two percent (1/50th) to penetrate." That matches how ROXUN and TACTICAL BIRD word their claims: UPF 50+ blocking 98% or more of UVA and UVB.
The same page adds that "a fabric must have a UPF of 50 to qualify" for the foundation's Seal of Recommendation. Columbia's listing says the Omni-Shade fabric in the Freezer Zero II has that Seal, though it prints no UPF number. None of these listings names the U.S. labeling standard (ASTM D6603) or a lab test, so the rating is the maker's word.
Stretch, sweat and a wet sleeve
Sleeves are knit to be snug, and that matters. The Skin Cancer Foundation warns that "if your clothing gets stretched or wet, it will lose some of its protective ability and become more transparent." A compression sleeve pulled tight over a big forearm is stretched by design, so size up if the listing gives sizes.
Cooling is the other claim these listings make, and each describes it differently. Columbia says the Freezer Zero II's blue rings "react with sweat to lower the temperature of the fabric." ROXUN calls its fabric "sweat-wicking." Neither publishes a figure, so take cooling as a comfort feature, not a number to compare.
Thumb loops, length and fit
A sleeve that rides up leaves the wrist bare, which is the spot between a glove and a sleeve. ROXUN says its thumb holes "enhance stability" and keep the sleeve from slipping. netdraw's cuffs have thumb holes too, and netdraw says they can be worn without the thumb through. Columbia lists thumbholes as well.
TACTICAL BIRD is the one listing here with numbers: it fits an upper arm of 13 to 14 inches and is about 20.5 inches long in XL. ROXUN and netdraw sell one size, and Columbia sizes the Freezer Zero II in letter sizes such as L/XL. Measure your upper arm before you order a one-size pair.
Pairing sleeves with shirts and gloves
Sleeves make sense with a short-sleeve shirt on hot days. If you would rather have one piece, a long-sleeve UPF fishing shirt covers the upper arm and shoulder that sleeves leave to the shirt. For the hands, a sun glove with a long cuff overlaps a sleeve's thumb loop.
The Skin Cancer Foundation's sun protection page puts it plainly: "Any clothing leaves some skin exposed, so you need sunscreen, too." Put it on the backs of your hands, fingertips and any gap where the sleeve meets the shirt.

Sleeves we left out
GOUNOD sleeves, which list UPF 50+ and thumb holes, were sold by a store called Gioro Palace, not the brand. The OutdoorEssentials sleeves came from a seller named Tough Outfitters, and Nike Dri-Fit UV sleeves only from resellers. BHYTAKI sells a six-pair pack from its own store, but its title says UPF 50 while the feature text says UPF 50+, so we left it out.
Searches for Huk, Simms and Buff arm sleeves turned up no listings from those brands, and we found no CPSC recalls for these brands in our recall tracker.

Do UPF arm sleeves replace sunscreen on the arms?
On the skin they cover, the sleeve's rating is the protection. The Skin Cancer Foundation still says to use sunscreen on exposed skin, since "any clothing leaves some skin exposed."
Are these sleeves UPF 50 when wet?
None of the listings says. The Skin Cancer Foundation says fabric that gets stretched or wet "will lose some of its protective ability," so a soaked sleeve may protect less than its label figure.
Can I wear arm sleeves in cool weather?
