Fishing Coolers (2026): Ice Claims and Drains

A fishing cooler has a harder job than a picnic cooler. It gets opened all day, sits in full sun on a deck, and has to take a fish long enough to be legal. So the questions are how long the maker says it holds ice (and under what conditions), whether a fish fits flat, and whether it drains without soaking the deck.

How we chose: we did not test these coolers. Figures come from the Amazon listings, and each one was sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock on September 29, 2026.

Lengths are the listings' exterior figures unless marked interior. Only RTIC publishes an interior size, so for a big fish, measure inside the cooler before you trust the quart number.

Keeping fish at 40°F or below

The rule that matters is the Food and Drug Administration's. Its outdoor food safety page says "cold food should be stored at 40 °F or below to prevent bacterial growth," and never to leave perishables in the "Danger Zone," between 40°F and 140°F, "for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour if outdoor temperatures are above 90 °F."

On a summer boat that one-hour limit arrives fast. A fish left in a bucket on the deck is already past it by mid-morning.

The same FDA page suggests packing drinks in one cooler and perishables in another, and to "limit the number of times the cooler is opened as much as you can." For anglers that means a drink cooler people can raid all day and a fish box that stays shut.

FDA's seafood page sets the same 40°F line at home: fish you will use within 2 days goes in a refrigerator at 40°F or below; otherwise wrap it tightly and freeze it.

Reading an ice-retention claim

Every day count in the table is the maker's claim, and the conditions behind it are thin.

• RTIC says "up to 7 days when following RTIC Cooling Tips." The listing does not say what those tips are or what air temperature it assumed.
• Coleman is the only one that names a condition: ice "up to 6 days in temperatures as high as 90°F."
• Igloo says "5-day ice retention" and "up to 5 days" with no conditions.
• Buffalo Gear contradicts itself: the title says ice-cold "More Than 48 Hours," a bullet says "More Than 24 Hours."

None names a test method. Treat the figures as a way to rank one maker's coolers against each other, not as a promise for your boat in August. A cooler opened every time a fish comes over the rail will not match any of them.

Key point: insulation thickness is a better hint than the day count. RTIC lists up to 2.4 in of foam on the 65 QT Ultra-Tough and up to 3 in on the 52 QT Ultra-Light. The Igloo and Coleman listings say "fully insulated" without a thickness.

Fish-size capacity: length beats quarts

Quarts measure volume, and fish are long and thin. A 65 qt cooler can hold 84 cans, but whether it holds a 30 in fish flat depends on the inside length, which only RTIC publishes (21¼ in inside the 52 QT).

For a long fish, the Coleman 120 qt is the longest box here at 38¼ in outside, and it has a ruler built into the lid. A fish bag goes further: the Buffalo Gear bag is 40 in long and comes in 48 in. It folds flat when empty, weighs 1.4 lb and fits where a hard cooler will not, such as a kayak's tank well. Our kayak fishing accessories guide covers what else goes back there.

Drains, rulers and a lid you can stand on

A drain matters more on a fish cooler than a drink cooler, because melt water mixes with blood and slime. Buffalo Gear says it switched its fish bag to a screw-on drain cap on a cord because a slip-on plug "can make a mess in your car or truck with fish blood." Coleman lists a "leakproof channel drain plug" on its 100 qt Marine; the 120 qt listing does not mention one.

Coleman's lid supports up to 250 lb, so the cooler doubles as a seat, and the 120 qt has molded cup holders. RTIC says its coolers can serve as a bench or step stool. The RTIC Ultra-Tough and the Ultra-Light are covered in detail, against YETI's Tundra, in our YETI vs RTIC comparison.

Recalls to check before you buy

Our recall tracker lists five cooler recalls since 2023, and two apply to brands named here:

• Igloo, February and May 2025. The CPSC recalled about 1,060,000 Igloo 90 Qt. Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers because "the tow handle can pinch consumers' fingertips against the cooler." The recall covers units made before January 2024, model numbers 27019 to 50680, and was later expanded by about 130,000 more. Igloo offers a free replacement handle. The Marine Ultra above is a different line, but check the model number on any used Igloo roller.
• YETI, March 2023. About 1.9 million Hopper M30 and M20 soft coolers and SideKick Dry cases were recalled over magnets that can detach; CPSC's notice covers soft coolers only.

We found no recall for RTIC, Coleman or Buffalo Gear coolers in the tracker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a fish bag keep fish as cold as a hard cooler?

The makers do not claim so. Buffalo Gear's own figure is 24 to 48 hours, while RTIC claims up to 7 days for its rotomolded Ultra-Tough. A fish bag is for a day on the water, not a long weekend.

Can I use one cooler for drinks and fish?

FDA suggests keeping beverages and perishable food in separate coolers, because the drink cooler gets opened often and warms up faster. Raw seafood should also be "securely wrapped," per the same FDA page.

How do I get the most ice time out of a cooler?

FDA's advice is to open it as little as possible, and it notes that frozen food packed in the cooler helps keep it cold longer. RTIC ties its own 7-day claim to following its Cooling Tips, so read the maker's instructions for the cooler you buy.
