Fishing Face Masks and Neck Gaiters (2026)

A neck gaiter covers the part of your face a cap and a collar miss: the ears, the sides and back of the neck, and the lower face down to the collarbone. On an open boat nothing shades them. What separates the options is the UPF the maker states and how easily you can breathe through the fabric with sunglasses on.

How we chose: we did not test these gaiters; each pick comes from its maker's stated UPF and features on the listing, and all five were sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock on September 29, 2026.

None of the five makers publishes a breathability figure, so the "breathing feature" column only reports a vent or hole the listing describes.

What UPF 50 on a gaiter means

A gaiter's UPF works like a shirt's. The Skin Cancer Foundation says a UPF 50 fabric "blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays and allows two percent (1/50th) to penetrate," and rates UPF 30 to 49 as very good and 50+ as excellent.

Buff is the only one of the five that names how its rating was set. Its listing says the CoolNet UV's UPF 50 "meets criteria by The Skin Cancer Foundation, and in accordance with standard AS/NZ4399:2017," the Australian and New Zealand sun-protective clothing standard. The others give the number without a standard.

Stretch and water change the number

Two points from the Skin Cancer Foundation matter more for gaiters than for shirts. Tight clothing "can stretch and reduce the level of protection offered, as the fibers pull away from each other." And fabric that gets wet "will lose some of its protective ability and become more transparent."

A gaiter is a stretch tube pulled over your nose, and some people dunk theirs to cool off. Both lower what it blocks. A snug fit like the KastKing's stays in place better, but it is also the most stretched. If you soak yours to stay cool, put sunscreen on underneath.

Breathing and fogged sunglasses

A solid tube over your mouth and nose sends warm breath straight up into your sunglasses. Two of these gaiters are built around that problem.

The Simms Sungaiter has what Simms calls a "vented front flange for unrestricted breathing," plus a slot at the back for ventilation or a ponytail. The BASSDASH gaiter uses "laminated laser cut breathing holes," which its listing says avoid "fogging up your glasses."

The Buff, KastKing and Huk gaiters have no vents. The Buff and KastKing are thin, stretch fabrics, and both listings say they wick sweat and dry fast. If you fish in still summer heat, the vented or perforated options are the ones to look at first.

What a gaiter leaves uncovered

Pulled up to just under the eyes, a gaiter still leaves the forehead, the nose bridge and the eyelids open. That is where a brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen come in.

The FDA's sun safety advice pairs long sleeves, pants, broad-brimmed hats and sunglasses with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, reapplied at least every two hours. The Skin Cancer Foundation says the best sun hats have a brim of at least three inches.

Gaiter or hooded shirt with a built-in mask?

Some fishing hoodies sew a gaiter into the hood. The BASSDASH hoodie in our UPF fishing shirt guide does that, and its listing puts mesh breathing holes in the mask.

A separate gaiter is easier to wash, dunk and replace, and it works with any shirt, including a crew neck or a button-up with a collar. A built-in one can't be left behind. If you already own shirts you like, a separate gaiter is the simpler buy.

Can I wear a gaiter as a hat under a cap?

Yes. Buff says the CoolNet UV can be worn "as a neck gaiter, face mask, balaclava, headband, hood, or bandana," and KastKing lists 13 ways to wear the Sol Armis, including as a hood.

Does the Skin Cancer Foundation recommend neck gaiters?

It doesn't rate gaiters as a category. Buff's listing says the CoolNet UV's UPF 50 meets the foundation's criteria; the other four listings make no foundation claim.

Are gaiters sized?

All five are one size. The BASSDASH listing says it "stretches to fit most adults," and Buff lists the CoolNet UV as adult size.

Is UPF 30+ enough?

The Skin Cancer Foundation calls UPF 30 to 49 very good protection and 50+ excellent. The Huk gaiter's UPF 30+ lets through more UV than the UPF 50 gaiters, which matters most on long, cloudless days.
