Thickness and what it does to boot fit
Every millimeter of neoprene is room your foot no longer has in the boot. Simms lists 3.5 mm, 8 Fans and the Frogg Toggs guards 3 mm, and Riverruns gives layers rather than a figure. A boot that fits over a thin liner can pinch over 3.5 mm.
Put the socks on before you size or lace the boots, and check against your own pair rather than a chart. Simms says the Guide Guard socks are made to be worn inside its wading boots. For booties sold to be worn barefoot, such as the Simms Zipit covered in our flats wading boots guide, a thick sock may not fit at all.
Gravel guards: built in or wrap-around
Sand and shell grit are what wear a hole in a sock and a blister in a heel. A gravel guard is a neoprene cuff that folds down over the boot collar so nothing drops in from the top.
Simms and 8 Fans build the guard into the sock and add a boot hook, which clips to the laces so the cuff cannot ride up. The Frogg Toggs guards are separate: a 3 mm wrap with a hook-and-loop closure you can add to socks or booties you already own. Without a hook, the lower edge relies on the fit of the taper.
Seams, drainage and warmth
Rubbing happens at the seams. Riverruns says its toe and heel are joined with flatlock stitching, which sits flatter than a raised seam, and adds a silicone sole pattern to stop the heel slipping inside the boot. Simms and 8 Fans do not describe their seams on the listing.
8 Fans says its underfoot lets water drain as you step out, so the socks stay light. Riverruns pitches its three layers for cold water. On a warm flat, a thinner sock drains and dries faster; for a cooler spring surf, the insulated one is the better fit.
Cuts, salt water and your feet
Neoprene protects against scrapes, but not every hazard. The CDC's Vibrio prevention page says: "If you have an open wound, stay out of saltwater or brackish water, if possible." It adds to cover a wound with a bandage that keeps coastal water out and to wash it with soap and clean running water after contact.
A sock that holds warm salt water against a cut foot all day is not a fix for that. Rinse socks in fresh water after each trip, and let them dry inside out before the next.

The Korkers I-Drain Neoprene Guard Sock and the Orvis Neoprene Guard Sock were sold only by third-party shops when we checked, so they are not linked. A Simms Neoprene Wading Socks listing on Amazon described a shoe in its feature list, so we skipped it until the listing matches the product. The Caddis neoprene bootie with gravel guards had no specs on its listing. We found no CPSC recall for these four brands in our recall records.
