Best UPF Fishing Shirts (2026): Labels, Vents, Hoods

A fishing shirt's job on salt water is simple: cover skin that sunscreen would otherwise have to cover for eight hours. The decisions are the UPF on the tag, whether you want a hood or a collar, and how much venting you need in the heat. The six shirts here cover those choices, from a hooded offshore shirt to a slim swim tee for wading.

What the UPF number on the tag means

UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) measures how much UV gets through the fabric. The Skin Cancer Foundation puts it this way: a UPF 50 fabric "blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays and allows two percent (1/50th) to penetrate." It rates UPF 30 to 49 as very good protection and UPF 50+ as excellent.

So the Tamiami II's UPF 40 is not a poor number. It just lets more through than a UPF 50 shirt, which matters most on long, cloudless days.

The same foundation lists what lowers a fabric's protection. Tight clothing "can stretch and reduce the level of protection," and fabric that gets stretched or wet "will lose some of its protective ability and become more transparent." For a shirt you will cast in and splash all day, buy it loose rather than snug.

On color, the foundation says "dark or bright colors keep UV rays from reaching your skin by absorbing them" better than light ones. That advice is for everyday clothes with no rating. When a shirt has a UPF on its tag, compare that number, whatever the color.

Read the tag, not the product line

Huk's own lineup shows why. On Amazon, the Pursuit Vented Long Sleeve crew is sold as a "+30 UPF Fishing Shirt," while the Pursuit Vented Hoodie is listed at UPF 50+. Huk's page for the hoodie says "+UPF 50 to block UVA and UVB rays." Same name, same maker, different rating.

Columbia's PFG line does the same thing. The Terminal Tackle is UPF 50 on Columbia's page, which also shows a Skin Cancer Foundation badge, but the Tamiami II button-up is UPF 40 on its listing. Hood, collar or crew neck

The back of the neck and the ears get sun all day on a boat, and a crew neck leaves both bare. Three of these shirts add a hood: the Huk Pursuit Vented Hoodie, the Simms SolarFlex and the BASSDASH.

The Simms goes furthest on the hands. Its listing describes extended sleeves with "envelope thumbholes, and center finger loop" to cover the back of the hand, which otherwise burns on the rod all day.

The BASSDASH sews a neck gaiter into the hood. Its listing says the gaiter "can be worn as a mask" and has mesh breathing holes to keep sunglasses from fogging.

Vents and fabric in the heat

All the shirts here with a listed fabric are synthetic. Huk lists the Pursuit hoodie as 100% polyester with mesh vented sides; Columbia lists the Terminal Tackle as 100% polyester with its Omni-Wick moisture treatment. The Tamiami II uses a mesh-lined vented back, the classic fishing-shirt layout, and the BASSDASH puts mesh panels on the sides and under the sleeves.

None of the makers publishes a breathability figure, so "vented" here means only that the listing shows a vent or mesh panel. If you fish the Gulf or South Florida in summer, a vented back or mesh sides is worth more than an extra UPF step.

If you wade or swim

The Amazon Essentials swim tee is built for the water. Its listing describes a slim fit "ideal for swimming," flat seams against chafing, and UPF 50. That makes it the one to wear wet wading or jumping in to free a snag. Because wet, stretched fabric loses some protection, per the Skin Cancer Foundation, a slim swim tee is best treated as a layer with sunscreen, not instead of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a UPF shirt wash out?

Each maker states its own rating; none of these listings claims the UPF is permanent after a set number of washes. Columbia says its Omni-Shade protection comes from "select fibers and fabrics." Follow the care label: Columbia's for the Terminal Tackle is machine wash, no bleach, tumble dry.

Is UPF the same as SPF?

No. SPF is the rating on a sunscreen's Drug Facts label; UPF rates how much UV passes through fabric. The Skin Cancer Foundation says a UPF 50 fabric lets through about 2 percent of UV.

Do I still need sunscreen with a UPF 50 hoodie?

On whatever it doesn't cover, yes. The FDA's sun safety advice pairs long sleeves, pants and hats with broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, reapplied at least every two hours.

Why is the Tamiami II rated lower than a T-shirt-style sun shirt?

Its listing states UPF 40 for the fabric, which is woven for a button-up with a vented back. The foundation still calls UPF 30 to 49 very good protection.
