High backs and kayak seats
Many fishing kayaks have a framed seat with a tall back, and a vest's back panel sits right against it. Stohlquist's Spinner listing says its thin, low-profile back panel works with high-back kayak seats, "reducing pressure points and eliminating seat interference." Kayak vests either move the foam up or thin it out.
Onyx's Kayak Fishing page says its "high foam back accommodates high back seats," with a mesh lower back. Stohlquist's Fisherman uses a "higher mesh-back design" for more clearance at "tall seat backs," per the listing.
Pockets: what rides on your chest
The Onyx Kayak Fishing vest has the most stated storage: a "largemouth cargo pocket" that Onyx says "securely holds a VHF radio or long nose pliers," a drop-down tray pocket with an elastic strap for a small tackle box, zippered fleece-lined pockets, a chest pocket and elastic attachment points.
Stohlquist's Fisherman has EVA pockets that "act as fold-down work surfaces," per the listing, useful for tying a leader in your lap. The Spinner has hook-and-loop front pockets and attachment points. If the radio goes on the vest, see our handheld VHF guide for which ones float.
Keep the load light. The Coast Guard's How to Choose the Right Life Jacket brochure says a jacket that fits "will not ride up over your chin or face"; check that it still doesn't with the pockets full.
Sizing: chest, not just weight
Adult vests here are sized by chest. Stohlquist lists the Spinner from a youth size for 55 to 88 lb up to Adult Universal (30 to 52 in chest) and Oversized (48 to 60 in), per the listing. Onyx sells the Kayak Fishing vest in Universal and Oversize, and the MoveVent fits people 90 lb and over. Try it on over the layers you fish in, then run the Coast Guard's lift test.
Coast Guard approval
Every vest here states Coast Guard approval on its listing or maker page, and the Onyx vests add Transport Canada. Onyx's FAQ notes that canoes and kayaks are exempt only from the extra throwable, not from the wearable life jacket for each person aboard; our USCG equipment checklist covers what else applies.
The Coast Guard's 2024 recreational boating statistics list 124 drownings among 143 paddlecraft deaths, second only to open motorboats by death count.
Inflatables on a kayak: the Coast Guard's caveats
The Coast Guard brochure marks every inflatable style, auto, manual and belt pack, "not for sports where immersion is expected (whitewater paddling, waterskiing, etc.)" and "not for children under 16 or non-swimmers." It adds that a belt pack "must be placed over head after inflation."
Makers draw the line differently. Onyx's M-16 listing calls it "ideal for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing." Onyx's FAQ says some of its auto/manual jackets can be set to manual only for kayaking, canoeing or fly fishing "where there is a good chance you may get wet," so a splash doesn't fire the cylinder.
