What a roll-top promises, and what it doesn't
Every roll-top here is sold as waterproof, but the makers qualify it. Sea to Summit's own dry bag FAQ says roll-top bags from all brands "are not designed to be submerged": they keep gear dry inside a boat, but water will seep through the closure if it is held under deep or long enough.
The fabric is a different question from the closure. Sea to Summit rates the Big River's 420D nylon at a 10,000 mm hydrostatic head on its Big River Dry Backpack page, with double-stitched, fully taped seams. That is a number you can compare. Earth Pak and MARCHWAY describe PVC and welded seams but publish no rating.

Closing it the way the maker says
A roll-top only works when it is rolled far enough. Each maker gives its own count:
- Sea to Summit quotes the Big River's 50 liters "with closure rolled three times," per the listing.
- Earth Pak says to fold the top down three to four times and buckle, per its listing.
- MARCHWAY says to spread the bottom open, leave air inside, roll the top three to five times and fasten the side buckles, then the top clip.
The air matters on a kayak. MARCHWAY's listing says the trapped air is what keeps its pack afloat, and Sea to Summit's FAQ says a packed bag should float if enough air is inside and the contents aren't too heavy. A pack full of lead and pliers may not, so clip it to the boat.
If you fish from a kayak or a boat
The Sea to Summit Big River is the pack to put on a deck. Its oval base resists rolling, lash loops let you strap it down, and the maker says the buckle can be replaced "in seconds with just a Phillips screwdriver." Sea to Summit also notes it has no inside pockets, so small items go in a smaller dry bag inside.
The Earth Pak Original 30L is the plainer choice for a paddler. Its listing includes a phone case called IPX8 certified, with two clear windows, and Earth Pak backs the bag with a five-year warranty. Its straps are simpler than the Summit's: no waist belt at this size.
Daiwa's reel maintenance FAQ makes a point that applies to any gear on a boat: "Put your gear away while travelling in a boat to avoid exposure to salt spray." A closed pack is one place to do that.

If you walk to the water
Jetty and beach anglers carry more and walk farther. The KastKing All Weather is a tackle backpack first: four 3600 boxes in the bottom compartment, a divider for the top, a soft-bait organizer, two removable rod holders and a line port. KastKing's product page describes a three-layer build with a 1000D nylon core.
It is water resistant, not a dry bag: the main compartment closes with zippers that, per the listing, provide "added weather resistance." Keep the phone and wallet in a pouch inside it if the surf is up.
The Earth Pak Summit is the roll-top for a long walk. Earth Pak's Summit page lists 500D PVC, a padded back panel, a chest strap and a waist belt to take weight off your back, in 35, 55 and 85 liters. Check which size the listing is set to before you buy.
The MARCHWAY sits between them: a roll-top with a ventilated back panel, sternum and waist straps, and Molle loops on the sides, per its listing. Its outside pocket is "splash resistant," so nothing that must stay dry goes there.
For travel
The Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Day Pack weighs 3.9 oz and packs to the size of a water bottle, per the listing. It is thin 30D fabric with sealed seams and a double roll-top, made to ride in a suitcase until you need a dry bag on a charter or a guided trip. It is not the pack to drag across a jetty.

Packs we left out
Piscifun's floating dry backpack was sold by a store called WILDPULSE, and FE Active's by Extreme Global Distribution, not by the brands themselves, so neither met our seller rule. Simms' Dry Creek Rolltop Backpack was listed by Amazon.com but only with a lead time, not in stock, on September 29, 2026.

Will a roll-top backpack float?
It can, if you leave air inside. Sea to Summit's FAQ says a sealed dry bag should float when enough air is trapped and the load isn't too heavy, and suggests adding a buoyancy device if you expect an unplanned swim.
How much can I carry in the Big River Dry Backpack?
Sea to Summit suggests about 20 kg for a short carry and 12 kg for a longer one, depending on the wearer, because the pack has a waist strap rather than a load-bearing hip belt.
Why does the listing say 50 liters "rolled three times"?
Because the rolled part isn't usable space. Sea to Summit quotes the volume with the closure rolled three times; roll it more and you lose a little room but seal it better.
