Skiff, jon boat and bay boat owners buy an anchor to hold on a spot, wait out a squall or keep the boat off the rocks when the engine quits. Which one holds depends on the bottom you fish, the boat's length and how much line you can let out. The line matters as much as the anchor.

The four types and the bottoms they suit
Fluke anchors, often called Danforth-style, have two flat, pointed flukes that pivot to dig in. Discover Boating calls the fluke one of the most common pleasure-boat anchors, good in sand and mud and less effective on rock. It also folds nearly flat for a small locker.
Grapnels have four or five tines that hook on rock, rubble and weed rather than burying. Folding ones lock open to fish and closed to stow, per Seachoice's listing.
Mushroom anchors are a cast cup that settles into soft bottom. Attwood lists its mushroom for soft mud, silt and weeds, and pitches it for lightweight boats. In sand, current or wind it gives little bite.
Box anchors are a folding steel cube with teeth on each side. MarineNow says its box anchor sets in mud, sand and rock, resets if the boat swings, and needs no chain.
How much line to let out
The Coast Guard's Boater's Guide to the Federal Requirements gives the rule: "five to seven times as much line as the depth of water plus the distance from the surface of the water to where the anchor will attach to the bow." In 8 ft of water with the bow cleat 2 ft up, that is 50 to 70 ft of line.
That ratio is called scope, and Discover Boating recommends 7:1 where there's room. It says a typical rode is a length of chain at the anchor end with nylon line to the boat. MarineNow's claim for its box anchor is the exception: up to 50% less rope and no chain, per the listing.
The same Coast Guard guide warns: "Do not anchor from the stern as this could swamp the boat." A small skiff with a low transom is exactly the boat that warning is for.
Key point: carry enough line for the deepest water you'll anchor in. Fishing a 30 ft ledge at five-to-one takes at least 150 ft plus bow height; a 100 ft kit won't reach.
Sizing by the maker's chart
Seachoice rates its anchors by boat length, and so should you. The Utility 7E is listed for boats 15 to 19 ft and the Deluxe 8S for 17 to 24 ft. MarineNow lists its 13 lb box anchor for boats up to 24 ft and sells larger sizes up to 34 ft.
Where your boat sits in two ranges, as an 18 ft skiff does here, the choice comes down to your bottom and how much weight you want to haul by hand. The grapnel and mushroom carry no length rating in their listings, so treat them as small-boat anchors.
Anchor lights and sound signals
Rule 30 of the Navigation Rules says a vessel under 50 meters at anchor may show one all-round white light where it can best be seen. Rule 30(e) exempts a vessel under 7 meters at anchor "not in or near a narrow channel, fairway or where other vessels normally navigate." Anchor near a channel at night and the light is required.
The Coast Guard guide adds that recreational vessels must use sound signals in reduced visibility "and while at anchor," which is why the sound-producing device on our required safety equipment list matters even when the engine is off.
Which anchor to buy
Buy a fluke sized to your boat if you fish sand and mud: the Utility 7E for a small skiff, the Deluxe 8S for a bay boat. Buy the 9 lb grapnel if you anchor over rock, reef rubble or weed. The Attwood mushroom suits only a light boat on soft mud in calm water. The MarineNow box fits crowded, shallow anchorages where you can't pay out full scope.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Coast Guard require an anchor on a small boat?
No. The Coast Guard's guide says it "does not regulate anchors," so there is no federal approval or carriage rule for one. Some states set their own equipment lists, so check yours.
Why use chain between the anchor and the rope?
Discover Boating describes the typical rode as chain at the anchor end with nylon line to the boat. Chain lies on the bottom, keeps the pull low, and takes abrasion from rock and shell that would chafe rope.
How do I free a fluke anchor that's stuck?
Seachoice's Utility anchor uses a slip-ring shank, which the listing says makes a stuck anchor simpler to retrieve. MarineNow says its box anchor lifts out with a vertical pull because little of it faces upward.
Does scope change with the tide?
Yes, because the Coast Guard's rule is based on depth. Anchor at low water on a 5 ft tide and the depth grows by 5 ft, so figure the line for high water, or let out more as it rises.
