SPF Lip Balm for Fishing (2026)

Your lips get the same sun and glare off the water as your face, and a fishing trip adds spray, wiped mouths and snacks that rub a balm off. Two numbers decide it: the SPF, and whether the label rates the balm water resistant for 40 or 80 minutes. The active ingredients matter if you fish in Hawaii or want a mineral formula.

How we chose: we did not test these balms. We read each one's Drug Facts on the listing and in the label filed with the National Library of Medicine's DailyMed, and link a balm only when Amazon.com sold it and it was in stock on September 30, 2026.

What the FDA lets a lip balm label say

An SPF lip balm is a sunscreen, so it carries a Drug Facts panel. The FDA says to apply sunscreen "to all uncovered skin, especially your nose, ears, neck, hands, feet, and lips," and that "water resistance claims, for 40 or 80 minutes, tell you how much time you can expect to get the labeled SPF-level of protection while swimming or sweating."

The same FDA advice is to "reapply at least every two hours" and more often when swimming or sweating. Three balms here carry the 80-minute claim. Aquaphor's does not: its directions say to "use a water resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating." The FDA's sunscreen page also says plainly, "There's no such thing as 'waterproof' sunscreen."

How much SPF for a day on the water

The American Academy of Dermatology says, "To protect your lips, apply a lip balm with an SPF of at least 30." All four picks meet that. For long days, the Skin Cancer Foundation goes further and calls SPF 50 or higher "necessary for extended outdoor activities," which only the Banana Boat reaches.

The Skin Cancer Foundation also says to "reapply every two hours and immediately after swimming or excessive sweating." On a boat, add eating and drinking. Banana Boat's own label lists "after eating or drinking" as a time to reapply.

Ingredients: mineral, chemical and Hawaii's rule

Sun Bum's label on DailyMed lists zinc oxide as the only active ingredient. The FDA has proposed that sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are generally recognized as safe and effective, and says it needs more data on most chemical filters, oxybenzone included.

Hawaii's Act 104 made it unlawful from 2021 to sell a sunscreen containing oxybenzone or octinoxate there without a prescription. The Aquaphor label lists both, at 5.4% and 6.75%. The Banana Boat label says "free from oxybenzone" and octinoxate.

Wind, cold and chapped lips

Two picks are also lip protectants. The Blistex Five Star label lists dimethicone at 2% for that job, and Blistex says candelilla wax helps "form an effective wind barrier." Aquaphor's label lists 31% petrolatum and says it "helps protect lips from the drying effects of wind and cold weather."

That makes the Aquaphor a fit for a cold, dry run offshore, as long as you keep it out of the spray. For a wet day, pick one of the 80-minute balms. Related: fishing face masks and neck gaiters cover the lips from the sun too.

Recalls and balms we left out

Our recall tracker lists FDA sunscreen recalls since 2023. One touches a brand here: in January 2023 Edgewell recalled Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Spray SPF 30 because of benzene, and its FDA notice says "no other Banana Boat products are in the scope of this recall." We found none for Sun Bum, Blistex or Aquaphor.

Rubber Ducky's SPF 44 lip balm is sold by the brand's store and its title says "water resistant," but we could not find a filed label giving the minutes. COOLA Liplux showed no price when we checked.

Is SPF 15 lip balm enough for fishing?

The FDA's minimum for sunscreens that help lower skin cancer risk is broad spectrum SPF 15, but the American Academy of Dermatology recommends at least SPF 30 for lips. The Skin Cancer Foundation calls SPF 50 or higher necessary for extended outdoor activity.

How often should I reapply SPF lip balm on the boat?

At least every two hours, and after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating for the water-resistant balms here, per their labels. Banana Boat's label also says to reapply after eating or drinking.

Can children use these lip balms?

The labels for the Banana Boat, Sun Bum and Blistex balms each say to ask a doctor before using them on children under 6 months. Past that age, the labels give the same directions as for adults.
