Boat Wash and Salt Removers for Saltwater (2026)

Salt dries into a crust on everything a saltwater day touches: the hull, the rails, the trailer frame and the passages inside the outboard. The products here cover it: a salt remover that also flushes the engine, boat soaps, a non-skid cleaner, and muffs for flushing on the trailer. Flush the outboard first

Yamaha's freshwater flushing article is blunt: "The outboard should be flushed after every use in salt or dirty water." Fresh water pushes sand and silt out of the cooling passages and, Yamaha says, removes salt buildup that can cause poor cooling and corrosion of the block and midsection.

Yamaha describes three ways to do it. A built-in flush fitting near the lower cowling takes a hose with the engine off. A flush bag fills with water around the lower unit and needs the engine running. Flush muffs clamp over the water intakes and also need the engine running, with the boat on a trailer or lift.

The rule for muffs and bags is the same in Yamaha's words: "never run the engine without cooling water." Turn the water on before starting and off after stopping, and don't rev the engine on muffs, because there isn't enough flow to cool it at high rpm. Your engine's owner's manual has the final say on which method it takes.

Muffs: check your intakes

Yamaha says muffs are for "models with single inlet lower units," and that outboards with more than one inlet on each side should be flushed with a bag. Look at your gearcase before buying.

Both muffs here are dual feed. Anchor-Man's listing says water goes to both cups at once so neither intake is starved, and gives the order: cups on, hose on, water first, then start and idle for 5 to 10 minutes while you watch the telltale stream. Five Oceans uses rectangular muffs, 4-7/8 by 3-1/4 in, for intakes a round cup may not cover.

Salt removers: what Salt Off and Salt-Away say they do

Star brite's Salt Off page lists it for boats, trailers, engines and fishing gear, and says its polymers bond to the surface to slow new salt buildup. The directions: spray, let it soak into the salt for 10 to 30 minutes, brush heavy deposits, rinse and let it air dry. To refill the 22 oz sprayer, add 1 fl oz of concentrate and top up with fresh water.

Salt-Away is the other name you will hear. Its maker's applications page describes a water-based, biodegradable solution that dissolves salt crystals and leaves a protective film until the surface is exposed to water again, and says it won't strip wax. On Amazon it was sold only by a third-party store, so it has no card here.

Boat soap for the routine wash

For the regular wash, a boat soap is measured and gentler than a degreaser. Star brite's Concentrated Boat Wash page gives the rate: 1 oz per gallon of water, more for heavier cleaning, applied with a cloth, sponge or brush, then rinsed and dried with a chamois to avoid water spots. Its listing says three capfuls clean a 24 ft boat.

Meguiar's M43 page makes one claim that matters on a waxed hull: it removes dirt, grime and scum "without stripping wax protection." Meguiar's does not publish a dilution rate on that page, so follow the label on the bottle.

Non-skid is its own problem because dirt settles into the texture. Star brite's Non-Skid Deck Cleaner is made for it: wet the deck, apply, scrub lightly and rinse, per the listing.

The trailer and the hardware

A trailer that backs into salt water gets the same crust on the frame, the springs and the hubs. Salt Off's page lists trailers among its uses; rinse the underside and the lights too. What we left out

Salt-Away and CRC's Salt Terminator engine flush were sold only by third-party stores on Amazon when we checked. 3M's Perfect-It Boat Wash was listed by Amazon.com but marked for industrial and occupational use only, not consumer sale. Better Boat's muffs were sold by a store called Love & Pieces.

We found no recalls for Star brite, Meguiar's, Anchor-Man or Five Oceans in our recall list, which covers CPSC notices since 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Salt Off to flush my outboard?

Star brite sells it as a marine engine flush, and says its Salt Off applicator connects to a garden hose and doubles as an engine flush. Check your outboard's manual first; Yamaha's own flushing guidance calls only for clean fresh water.

How long should I run the engine on muffs?

Anchor-Man's listing says to idle for 5 to 10 minutes with the water running, watching the telltale the whole time. Yamaha adds not to rev the engine on muffs, since the hose cannot supply enough water at high rpm.

Do I need a salt remover, or is fresh water enough?

Fresh water removes most salt. Salt-Away's maker says water alone does not remove all of it, and Star brite says Salt Off leaves a polymer layer against new deposits. Neither publishes a test showing how much more they remove.
