Inflatable vs Foam Life Jackets for Fishing (2026)

A life jacket only works if it is on you when you go over, and that is the whole argument between inflatable and foam. Inflatables are thin enough to wear all day but come with rules and upkeep; foam floats with no action from you. Which one fits depends on your age, your swimming, and how likely a swim is.

Why wearing it matters more than which kind

The Coast Guard's 2024 recreational boating statistics are blunt. Where the cause of death was known, 76% of people killed in boating incidents drowned, and where life jacket use was known, 87% of them were not wearing one.

Federal rules only require you to carry one. A Boater's Guide to the Federal Requirements says every recreational vessel must carry a wearable life jacket for each person aboard, boats 16 feet and longer (except canoes and kayaks) also need a throwable, and children under 13 must wear one while underway unless below deck or in an enclosed cabin.

What an inflatable asks of you

The Coast Guard's life jacket wear page lists the trade-offs: inflatables come in adult sizes only, are "often approved only when worn", and "are not appropriate for weak or non-swimmers." It also says one must have "a full cylinder and all status indicators on the inflator must be green, or the device is NOT serviceable."

In practice "approved only when worn" means an inflatable stuffed in a hatch may not count toward the one-per-person rule. Read the label: it states the wear condition, age and weight limits for that model.

Auto, manual or belt pack

The Coast Guard's How to Choose the Right Life Jacket guide describes the three inflatable styles. An auto inflatable "inflates automatically upon immersion or manual activation"; a manual one "only inflates upon manual activation". A belt pack also inflates on demand but "must be placed over head after inflation." Every style carries the same line: "Not for children under 16 or non-swimmers."

Auto inflation earns its keep if you could be knocked out or disoriented going over the rail. Manual avoids unwanted inflation from spray or a wet deck but depends on you pulling the handle. The A/M-24 does both: Onyx's listing says it converts to manual-only for paddling or fly fishing, when you are likely to get wet anyway.

The same guide marks inflatables "Not for sports where immersion is expected (whitewater paddling, waterskiing, etc.)". Onyx's FAQ adds that fully inflatable life jackets are not approved for high-speed uses like riding a personal watercraft or tubing, and that it does not recommend them below 40°F.

Rearm kits and upkeep

A fired inflatable is not a life jacket until you rearm it. Onyx's FAQ says to use a rearm kit with a cylinder from the vest's maker, that a punctured cylinder cannot be reused, and that you should check the cylinder is full before each outing. The correct kit number is printed on the jacket and in its manual.

Onyx also says the Coast Guard recommends testing the automatic system in water at the start of each season, that the yellow water-sensing bobbin should be checked before each use, and that in humid regions like the Southeast it should be replaced yearly. Its rearming kits page explains the service indicator: green means ready, red means service is needed.

Key point: buy a spare kit when you buy the jacket. The A/M-24 listing says it rearms with Onyx kit #1352; we found that kit on Amazon only from third-party sellers, so it is not linked here. The M-16's 16 g kit is sold by Amazon.com.

When foam is the better call

Pick foam for anyone under 16, anyone who can't swim well, and any fishing where you expect to get wet: kayaks, wading, surf. Onyx's FAQ says people under 16 must have an inherently buoyant or hybrid jacket in their size range aboard to meet the carriage requirement, and it advises non-swimmers against inflatables because they may panic and forget to pull the handle.

For a boat that takes guests, a few Stearns Classic Series vests sized for the crew cover the carriage rule with nothing to arm. From a kayak, the Onyx Kayak Fishing vest has a high back for kayak seats and pockets for tools.

If you fish offshore or alone

A life jacket keeps you afloat; it doesn't tell anyone where you are. If you run a boat under 26 feet, clip on the engine cut-off switch lanyard so the boat stops when you go over, and carry a registered personal locator beacon on the jacket itself.

No. Onyx says its inflatables are designed to be worn over your clothing and never under any type of clothing, so the chamber can inflate freely.

Will spray or rain set off an automatic inflatable?

Rarely, if it is worn and stored properly, says Onyx. Premature inflation almost always happens when the jacket is stowed in the boat, where humidity is high, or laid flat where water can reach it; Onyx recommends storing it hung up in a cool, dry place.

Can I fly with an inflatable life jacket?

Usually, within limits. Onyx cites the TSA allowance of up to two small CO2 cartridges in a life vest plus two spares, presented together, in carry-on or checked bags. Check your airline's own policy before you pack it.

How do I know which rearm kit my jacket takes?

It is printed on the jacket and in the owner's manual, or you can call the maker. Onyx's rearming page also explains the letters and numbers in a model name: the letter is the inflation style and the number is the CO2 cylinder size in grams.
