Night fishing means tying knots, unhooking fish and moving around a wet deck or slick rocks with your hands full. A headlamp does that work, and around salt water it needs a stated water rating, a red mode that keeps your night vision, and power you can refill mid-trip.

What IPX4, IPX7 and IPX8 promise
The IEC's IP ratings page explains the code: the first digit rates dust from 0 to 6, the second rates water from 0 to 9, and an X means that part was not rated. The full test conditions are in IEC 60529. Under it, IPX4 covers water splashing from any direction, and IPX7 covers immersion to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
IPX8 means more than IPX7, but the maker sets the depth and time. Black Diamond calls the Spot 400 IPX8 on its Spot 400 page without publishing those numbers. Coast's WPH32R is IP68 to 1 meter, the same depth as its IP67 lamps. A light that goes overboard is lost to depth or current long before its rating matters, so a lanyard or a hat clip does as much as the extra digit.
Red light and night vision
All five have a red mode. Black Diamond calls its setting "red night vision," and Coast says its red and green options help "preserve night vision." Coast's WPH10R lists red in low, high and flashing.
Use red on deck, in the cockpit and when you talk to someone, so you don't blind a fishing partner or a helmsman. Switch to white only for the job that needs color, such as reading a tide chart or checking a hook. Lock modes on the Black Diamond lamps stop the light switching on in a bag.
Lumens, beam distance and run time
Output figures are the makers'. Coast's WPH10R page lists 1000 lumens and a 135-meter beam at Turbo, 500 lumens for 3.25 hours on High, 100 lumens for 9 hours on Medium, and 15 lumens for 50 hours on Moon Glow. Neither Coast's nor Black Diamond's product page names the ANSI/PLATO FL1 standard behind those numbers, so compare them within a brand rather than across.
For rigging and unhooking, a low setting is usually what you use most. The high numbers matter for scanning a shoreline, a channel marker or a line in the water.
Batteries, charging and salt
AAA batteries are the simplest refill offshore: the Spot 400 and the FLX10R's backup take them. The Coast WPH10R, WPH32R and Black Diamond Spot 400-R rely on a charge, so a power bank or a USB port on the boat matters on a long night. Rinse any lamp in fresh water after a salt trip and dry it before charging.
A headlamp is not a navigation light
On a boat or kayak, the Navigation Rules set the lights you must show, and a headlamp is not one of them. What we left out
Petzl headlamps were sold only by third-party shops when we checked, so they are not linked. The Black Diamond Storm 500-R's listing says "waterproof" without a rating, and we could not find its rating on Black Diamond's site. We found no CPSC recall for Black Diamond or Coast headlamps in our recall records.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is IPX4 enough for fishing?
For rain and spray, IPX4 is the splash rating. A lamp that may get dunked while landing a fish or wading needs IPX7 or IPX8; all five here are at least IP67.
Why do some headlamps have a green light?
The FLX10R listing offers red and green LEDs to "preserve night vision or maintain visibility." Green on a headlamp is a work light, not a navigation light, so it does not replace the lights the Navigation Rules require.
Rechargeable or AAA for night fishing?
AAA wins on a long trip with no power aboard, since spares weigh little. Rechargeable lamps save buying batteries; the Coast FLX10R does both.
