Seasickness Remedies for Fishing Trips (2026)

A charter or offshore day is long, and a seasick angler has no way off the boat. The practical choices are two over-the-counter antihistamines, meclizine and dimenhydrinate, plus acupressure bands and a prescription patch. They differ in how long a dose lasts, how drowsy they make you and who can take them. Everything below comes from the labels and public-health sources; none of it is medical advice.

Meclizine: one dose for the day

Meclizine is the active ingredient in Dramamine Less Drowsy and Bonine. The Dramamine Less Drowsy Drug Facts list 25 mg per tablet, "1 to 2 tablets once daily," first dose "1/2 to 1 hour before starting activity," and "Do not give to children under 12 years of age unless directed by a doctor."

The Bonine Drug Facts say the same dose "should be taken one hour before travel starts." Bonine's Amazon listing calls it non-drowsy; its own label still warns that it may cause drowsiness and that alcohol makes it worse.

Dimenhydrinate: shorter doses, more drowsiness

The Dramamine Original Drug Facts list 50 mg per tablet, "1 to 2 tablets every 4-6 hours" for adults, not more than 8 in 24 hours. The label says "marked drowsiness may occur," to avoid alcohol, and to ask a doctor first if you have glaucoma, a breathing problem such as emphysema, or trouble urinating from an enlarged prostate.

For children, the Dramamine for Kids Drug Facts list 25 mg chewables for ages 2 to 12, with the first dose ½ to 1 hour before the trip. It says not to give it under age 2 unless a doctor directs.

What the CDC says about timing and the boat itself

The CDC Yellow Book chapter on motion sickness gives meclizine and dimenhydrinate an onset of about 2 hours, meclizine lasting 8 to 24 hours and dimenhydrinate about 8. It names drowsiness as "the most common side effect." Take it before you leave the house, not at the dock.

Without drugs, the CDC lists a visual horizon, avoiding visual tasks, aligning your stance with the boat's motion ("wave-riding" or "sea legs"), and staying out of places such as the bow. In practice that means eyes up and away from the phone, and a spot amidships.

Scopolamine is a prescription

The scopolamine skin patch, per the CDC, takes 6 to 8 hours to start working and lasts up to 72 hours. It needs a prescription, so we list no product for it. The CDC says it should not be used by people with glaucoma or at risk of urinary retention, and warns it can cause "hallucinations and mental confusion in children and should be avoided" in them.

If a multi-day trip is coming, that is a conversation with your doctor well before departure. For any of these medicines, and especially with other medications or health conditions, talk to a pharmacist or doctor before you take them.

Acupressure bands: what the maker and the CDC say

Sea-Band says its bands press a plastic stud on the P6 (Nei-Kuan) point on each wrist and calls them "clinically proven." The CDC is less convinced: "Laboratory trials show that acupressure bands or similar treatments are no more effective than placebo." It rates ginger and diets as having "only weak and contradictory supporting evidence."

The bands have no drowsiness warning, which is their appeal to a skipper or anyone running gear. Treat them as an add-on to horizon-watching, not a replacement for a tablet taken in time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drink beer on the boat if I took Dramamine?

The labels say no. Both the Dramamine Original and Dramamine Less Drowsy Drug Facts say to avoid alcoholic drinks, and Dramamine Original adds that alcohol, sedatives and tranquilizers may increase drowsiness.

Is Dramamine Less Drowsy the same as Bonine?

Both are meclizine HCl 25 mg, with the same once-daily adult dose on their labels. Dramamine Less Drowsy is a tablet you swallow; Bonine is a raspberry chewable.

Can I take seasickness pills if I'm driving the boat?

All four tablet labels warn about drowsiness. Dramamine Original's says to be careful driving a motor vehicle or operating machinery, and Bonine's says to avoid both if drowsy. If you are at the helm, the drug-free measures are the ones without that warning.
