## Rechargeable or D-cell aerators

**Rechargeable pumps** trade a charging cable for never buying batteries. The pump in the Engel bait cooler is a newer model, the AP3, that Engel rates at up to 48 hours.

**D-cell pumps** run longer between swaps and work with no power at hand. Marine Metal rates the B-3 at "+/- 100 hours with 2 alkaline D batteries or +/- 50 hours with 1 D battery." Flambeau's Portable Aerator One is rated at 40 hours on two D cells.

Speed settings are the other difference. Beyond Braid pitches its four speeds for exactly this: a low setting for "a small amount of bait," the top one for "maximum oxygen for a full bucket." Engel offers three speeds and an intermittent mode.


## Insulated buckets and bait coolers

Insulation slows how fast the water warms. Flambeau says its 1 in foam liner and vented lid protect minnows "from heat and sun to keep them alive." Frabill calls its 8 qt bait box a live bait storage cooler, and adds a lift-out net liner so you can pull bait without chasing it around the bucket.

The Engel bait cooler is a hard cooler built for the job: an EVA gasket so water doesn't slosh out, stainless steel hinges and latches, and a pull net. Engel sells it in 7.5, 13, 19 and 30 qt, and the 30 qt ships with a larger pump. Engel also pitches it as a drink cooler when there's no bait in it.

## Salt, and where to set the bucket

Only some makers here speak to salt: Engel calls its pump "water-resistant and saltwater approved," Frabill says its bait box is "saltwater & freshwater tested," and Marine Metal lists fresh and saltwater use with a rubber-booted switch. Beyond Braid says its pump is water resistant with a sealed motor, but makes no saltwater claim.

Keep the pump itself out of the water unless the maker says it can go in. Every pump here pushes air down a hose to a stone at the bottom of the bucket, and the pump body sits outside or clips to the lid.

## What we left out

The **Marine Metal CB-35 Cool Bubbles** 5 gal insulated pail with a B-3 pump was sold only by a reseller, UnbeatableSale Local, when we checked. Frabill's 1.3 gal insulated bucket with a lid-housed aerator was in stock but low, and its listing gives no run time or power source. Small aquarium air pumps sold as bait aerators by sellers not named for the brand were out under our seller rule.
