- Method: picks chosen from Amazon listings and brand specs; not hands-on tested; current Amazon prices are on the page; content checked 2026-10-01.
- Quick answer: Choose a tide-graph G-Shock if you want a 200 m solar watch that estimates the tide offline from settings you enter. Choose a Garmin Instinct if you want tide station times, GPS and alerts. No tide G-Shock had a trusted Amazon seller, so Casio's WS-1700H stands in.

## Key takeaways

- The solar GW-7900 estimates the tide from your home city and a high tide time you set; Casio says it is not for calculating tide times.
- Garmin's Tides app needs a paired phone to load a tide station, then shows a 24-hour chart and alerts.
- On October 1, 2026, tide-graph G-Shocks on Amazon came only from resellers; Amazon.com sold the Instinct 3 Solar Tactical and Instinct E.

## Products (chosen from listings, not tested)

1. **Casio WS-1700H Tide Graph Moon Phase Digital Watch** (details: https://saltprooflab.com/tools-catch/g-shock-vs-garmin-instinct-for-fishing#product-B0CS8DX4J3) — Buy it if you want Casio's tide graph from a seller that carries the warranty.
   - Pros: Same Casio tide graph listing: tide level for a specific date and time, plus moon data; Approx. 10-year CR2025 battery, per Casio; 100-meter water resistance
   - Cons: Not a G-Shock: no shock-resistant construction or solar charging stated; 100 m, not 200 m
2. **Garmin Instinct 3 Solar Tactical Edition, 45 mm** (details: https://saltprooflab.com/tools-catch/g-shock-vs-garmin-instinct-for-fishing#product-B0F674Y3FZ) — Buy it if you want station tides and GPS on a watch the sun keeps charged.
   - Pros: Tides app, tide glance and high or low tide alerts, per Garmin; Up to 28 days as a smartwatch, unlimited with solar under Garmin's assumptions; Multi-band GPS; 10 ATM water rating; built-in flashlight
   - Cons: Tactical features most anglers won't use; tide stations load through a paired phone
3. **Garmin Instinct E, 45 mm** (details: https://saltprooflab.com/tools-catch/g-shock-vs-garmin-instinct-for-fishing#product-B0DSC72873) — Buy it if you want Garmin's tide app and don't need solar.
   - Pros: Tides and tide glance listed in Garmin's specs; 10 ATM water rating; Multi-GNSS support, 3-axis compass and barometric altimeter
   - Cons: No solar; up to 16 days as a smartwatch and 24 hours of GPS, per Garmin

Both lines sell on toughness, but they answer the tide question in opposite ways. A tide-graph G-Shock works it out on the watch from the moon and settings you enter. A Garmin Instinct downloads predictions for a real tide station through your phone and adds GPS. Everything below comes from Casio's and Garmin's own specs and manuals.

**How we chose:** we did not test these watches. We compared Casio's specs for its tide-graph G-Shocks with Garmin's for the Instinct 3 Solar and Instinct E. Many watch listings on Amazon are third-party sellers that may not carry the maker's warranty, and on October 1, 2026 every tide-graph G-Shock we found was one, so neither G-Shock gets a card.

*Garmin assumes all-day wear with 3 hours a day outside in 50,000 lux conditions. G-Shock specs are from Casio's [GW-7900](https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/product.GW-7900-1/) page; the GBX-100 and Garmin figures are cited in the sections below.

## How a G-Shock works out the tide

The solar **GW-7900** shows "tide & moon graphs" in a 200 m case, per Casio. Its [manual](https://www.casio.com/content/dam/casio/global/support/manuals/watches/pdf/31/3193/qw3193_EN.pdf) bases the graph on your Home City, and if it drifts from what you see on the water, you correct it by entering a high tide time "from a tide table, the Internet," or similar. Casio calls the result "a reasonable approximation of tidal movements only."

The **GBX-100** G-Lide moves the setup to your phone. Casio's [GBX-100 page](https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/product.GBX-100-1/) lists "Tide graph setting (approximately 3,300 global points)" through the CASIO WATCHES app, plus sunrise and sunset times. It runs on a CR2032 for about 2 years, not solar.

Neither G-Shock needs a signal once set. That is the case for one: the tide curve is always there, even with the phone dead in a dry box.

## How a Garmin Instinct shows tides

Garmin's [Instinct 3 manual](https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/GUID-2C274FD2-F0C3-445C-B0AC-700FECCE12E9/EN-US/GUID-3DB3FF64-F943-4D96-8334-C9C7764FE85E.html) says you can view a tide station's height and next high and low tides "when you pair your watch with a compatible phone." You add a station from your current location, a saved spot or coordinates, and the watch shows a 24-hour chart.

You can set a favorite station for the tide glance and an alert "Til High Tide" or "Til Low Tide." Garmin's warning is that tide information "is for information purposes only."

The Instinct also carries what the G-Shocks don't: GPS, a 3-axis compass and a barometric altimeter, per Garmin's Amazon listings.

## Battery and charging

This is the clearest practical split. Casio says the GW-7900 runs about 9 months on its rechargeable cell with no light at all after a full charge, and it is solar powered.

Garmin's [Instinct 3 Solar Tactical specs](https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/1705221) give up to 28 days as a smartwatch and up to 40 hours of GPS-only tracking, rising to 130 hours with solar. "Unlimited" smartwatch life assumes 3 hours a day outside in 50,000 lux. The [Instinct E](https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/1315817) has no solar: up to 16 days, or 24 hours of GPS.

## Water ratings

The G-Shocks are 200 m water resistant per Casio; the Instincts are 10 ATM. Garmin's [water rating definitions](https://www.garmin.com/en-US/legal/waterrating-definitions/) put 10 ATM at the pressure of 100 meters, rated for swimming, snorkeling and high-speed water sports. None of the four is sold as a scuba diver's watch; our [dive watch water resistance guide](https://saltprooflab.com/tools-catch/dive-watch-water-resistance-explained) explains the difference.

## Who each one suits

**Choose a tide-graph G-Shock if:**
- you fish one home area and want a tide curve that works with no phone or signal;
- you want 200 m on the case and solar power with months of reserve (GW-7900);
- you will set a high tide time from a tide table now and then.

**Choose a Garmin Instinct if:**
- you move between inlets and want real station times and alerts;
- you want GPS and a compass on the wrist;
- you charge a watch anyway, or want solar to stretch it (Instinct 3 Solar).

The first card is a stand-in, not a G-Shock: no tide-graph G-Shock had a trusted Amazon seller (Amazon.com or a Casio store) when we checked. The Casio WS-1700H carries the same tide graph and moon data entries in Casio's specs and Amazon.com sells it; our [tide watch guide](https://saltprooflab.com/tools-catch/fishing-watches-with-tide-graphs) covers it and the quatix 8.

We found no CPSC recall for Casio or Garmin watches in our [recall tracker](https://saltprooflab.com/recalls).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why is there no G-Shock link on this page?

We link a watch only when Amazon.com or the brand's own store sells it. On October 1, 2026, the GW-7900 and GBX-100 listings we found came from resellers, so we quote Casio's specs and card the WS-1700H instead.

### Can I fix a G-Shock tide graph that doesn't match my water?

Yes, on the GW-7900. Casio's manual lets you enter the high tide time for a date; it adjusts the first high tide and sets the second high tide of that day automatically.

### Does the Instinct 3 Solar need sun every day?

No. Without solar it still runs up to 28 days as a smartwatch, per Garmin. The unlimited figure needs about 3 hours a day outside in bright light.
