Flambeau's FAQ says that layer stays only while the container stays closed, "less than one air exchange per day" ideally, and that once a part leaves the box the layer "dissipates from metal surfaces (typically within about an hour)." That has a practical consequence on the water. Tackle is protected in storage, not while it rides in an open tray on the deck. It pulls water vapor out of the air in a sealed box, which matters when you close a lid on a humid dock. Dry & Dry's listing says one 5 g packet covers about 600 cubic inches, and Vbeijll's 20 g packets cover up to 120 cubic inches each. Both makers say their packets can be reused. Dry & Dry gives an oven at 200 to 250°F for half an hour to two hours, or a microwave on defrost for 7 to 12 minutes. Vbeijll's beads turn from orange to dark green when full, which tells you when a packet needs that treatment. A desiccant and a VCI can share a box. Flambeau says Zerust keeps working "in the presence of light moisture," and a packet of silica gel keeps the moisture light. ## Hook finishes, and when to replace A hook's finish is its own rust defense. BKK says the Viper-41's Bright Tin coating is there "to resist even harsh saltwater environments."
