## Why a coat instead of a vest in cold water

The [National Weather Service](https://www.weather.gov/safety/coldwater) warns that cold shock "can be just as severe and dangerous from water temperatures of 50-60°F (10-15°C) as it is from water at 35°F (2°C)," and that "wearing a life jacket significantly increases chances of survival." A float coat's case is simple: you are more likely to be wearing it when you fall in.

Onyx makes the cold-water argument for its own jacket, saying it "provides better hypothermia protection than a traditional, vest style life jacket in colder water conditions." Mustang says its Classic flotation bomber "uses closed-cell foam insulation to provide flotation and delay the onset of hypothermia during water immersion." Those are the makers' claims, not a rating.

The Coast Guard's [2024 boating statistics](https://www.uscgboating.org/library/accident-statistics/Recreational-Boating-Statistics-2024.pdf) show why wearing matters: where the cause of death was known, 76% of victims drowned, and where life-jacket use was known, 87% were not wearing one.


## Inflatables and cold weather

An inflatable is often the easier life jacket to wear in summer, but [Onyx's FAQ](https://www.onyxoutdoor.com/pages/faqs) says the company does "not recommend wearing inflatable life jackets for ice fishing or on open water when the temperatures are below 40°F (4°C)." A foam float coat needs no cylinder, and nothing has to fire. ## Reading the label: approved or "flotation assist"

The [Coast Guard's life-jacket page](https://www.uscgboating.org/recreational-boaters/life-jacket-wear-wearing-your-life-jacket.php) tells you to check the label for user weight and chest size, and says labels show the performance type and any restrictions. Newer labels use levels 50, 70, 100 and 150, the minimum buoyancy in newtons; Level 70 works out to about 15.7 pounds.

Mustang lists its Catalyst Flotation Coat with a "Harmonized Level 70 flotation system." Onyx's page says only "U.S. Coast Guard approved," with no type or level, so look at the label inside the coat. The Coast Guard describes Type III devices as made to hold a conscious wearer upright; they are not required to turn an unconscious person face up.

Ice-fishing parkas are the trap. Clam's listing for the IceArmor Rise V3 says its "MotionFloat" is "buoyancy assist" for "an ice break-through (Not Coast Guard Approved PFD)." Eskimo sells the Roughneck as "flotation-assist" and names no approval. Neither is sold as a Coast Guard-approved life jacket, so neither replaces the ones on the [USCG required equipment](https://saltprooflab.com/life-jackets-safety/uscg-required-safety-equipment) list.


## Fit and wear

The Coast Guard's [life-jacket brochure](https://www.uscgboating.org/images/howtochoosetherightlifejacket_brochure.pdf) gives a fit test that works for a coat too: fasten it, hold your arms straight up, and have a friend pull up at the shoulders. It should not ride up over your chin. Onyx adds an interior waist belt for the same reason.

The same brochure says half of all recreational boating deaths happen in calm water. A coat that stays on in the cabin and on deck is the point, so size it for the layers you wear under it.
